It began in 2001 as the project for Dan Whitford. In 2003, Whitford recruited a band, and in 2005 toured internationally for the first time, visiting London, New York and Los Angeles. They have played with international acts Franz Ferdinand, TV on the Radio, Pretty Girls Make Graves and Junior Senior, amongst others. Cut Copy is signed to the record label Modular in Sydney.
In 2004, Cut Copy released their debut album Bright Like Neon Love. The music is written and produced by frontman Dan Whitford, who is also a graphic designer and DJ. Cut Copy released three singles from this album: "Saturdays," "Future," and "Going Nowhere."
They also released a Fabriclive album featuring a mix of several synth/retro/elektropop songs such as (for example) MSTRKRFT and New Young Pony Club.
Their second album, In Ghost Colours, was released in 2008. Four singles were issued: "So Haunted," "Hearts on Fire," "Lights and Music," and "Far Away."
In 2011, Cut Copy released their third album, Zonoscope, which included the singles "Where I'm Going," "Take Me Over," and "Need You Now." Zonoscope marked the addition of bassist and synthesist Ben Browning to the Cut Copy lineup, making the group a four-piece. Browning had previously supported the band as a touring musician throughout the In Ghost Colours Tour.

Cut Copy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You know, you know
You know, you know,
You know, you know
I gotta erase this part, I'm not afraid to say
I walked a thousand miles to so far away
Amongst the open arms it's the early day
This love runs free, tonight
This love runs free, tonight
Got rhythm!
You know, you know,
You know, you know
Shift the grains of sand and make them look like brothers
One of the shadows was amongst the other lovers
I see them they move the covers in an empty room
We're on a fight but still this love grows through
This love runs free, tonight
This love runs free, tonight
This love runs free, tonight
This love runs free, tonight
This love runs free, tonight
This love runs free, tonight
This love runs free, tonight
This love runs free, tonight
The opening lines of Cut Copy's song "Believers" set the tone for the rest of the track, with the repeated phrase "You know, you know" and the driving beat establishing a sense of urgency and insistence. The lyrics that follow describe a relationship that has undergone some difficulties, with the singer admitting that they need to "erase this part" and that they have "walked a thousand miles to so far away." Despite this, the song remains optimistic, with the lines "but we wrote our parts and now I have to say / this love runs free tonight" suggesting that the relationship has been worked on and is now able to thrive.
The second verse contains more vivid imagery, with the singer describing themselves moving grains of sand to make them "look like brothers," and watching as the shadows of other couples move under covers in an empty room. Despite their own struggles, the singer recognizes that their love is growing and flourishing, and the repeated chorus affirming that "this love runs free, tonight" serves as a hopeful reminder of that fact.
Overall, "Believers" is a song that celebrates the power of love to overcome obstacles, and the importance of working through difficulties in order to achieve something worthwhile. The repeated chorus creates a sense of urgency and excitement, while the vivid imagery and introspective lyrics add depth and complexity to the song.
