Cut Copy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's a secret I've been keeping for you
It's a secret I've been keeping from you,
It's a secret I've been keeping for you
The repetition of the opening lines of Cut Copy's song Midnight Runner creates a sense of urgency and importance. The singer is confessing to an undisclosed secret. The ambiguity of the secret makes the song relatable, as listeners may apply their own secrets to the lyrics. It could be something embarrassing, a profound realization, or a hidden love. The use of the pronoun "you" in both lines of the chorus suggests that the secret is related to a specific person, who may or may not be aware of it. The repetition of the phrase is also reminiscent of a mantra, emphasizing the significance of the secret.
The overall mood of the song is intense and emotive. The electronic beats and synths build up to a crescendo, creating a sense of urgency and desperation in the listener. This could represent the singer's desire to reveal the secret and the fear of the consequences that may follow. The chorus is followed by verses with more specific lyrics, describing the emotions and motivations behind the singer's actions. The song's title, Midnight Runner, adds a sense of mysteriousness to the lyrics, further emphasizing the hidden nature of the secret.
