Wish
Cymbals Eat Guitars Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Your pupils pinpoints and mine gigantic
I watch the wind in distant trees
(Can we shut the lights, please)
The possibilities in standard tuning
Hands have X's, I'm visibly trashed
Streetlights flicker on as we pass them
And you're just so handsome
That I have to laugh when
You say the same blood runs through us
Me, though, I maintain that I'm different
Years passed and I wish I could show you
And I wish that I told you
Eleven months and not a word from you
But then, out of the Long Dark Blue
Like a busted dealer
Like a son or daughter
You hit the showers
And I feel so old when
You say the same blood runs through us
Me, though, I maintain that I'm different
Years pass and I wish I could show you
And I wish that I told you
You say "gravitational waves move through me"
You sound sedated
I ask you what happened
Years passed and I wish I could show you
Wish I could hold you
The song "Wish" by Cymbals Eat Guitars is a poignant reflection on the passage of time and the feeling of distance between two people who were once close. The opening lines, "An inch ahead of the event horizon, your pupils pinpoints and mine gigantic," suggest a sense of tension and anticipation, as if the singer is on the verge of something momentous. The next line, "I watch the wind in distant trees," provides a contrast, emphasizing the vastness of the world outside of the immediate moment. The repeated plea to "shut the lights" reinforces the feeling of intimacy and intensity, as if the singer is desperate for a moment of clarity and connection.
As the song progresses, the singer reflects on the past, recalling moments spent with someone who is now distant. The image of "Hands [with] X's" suggests a sense of defeat or exhaustion, as if the singer has been beaten down by time and circumstance. The line "You light a Salem you stole from your aunt / And you're just so handsome / That I have to laugh when" hints at a playful and flirtatious dynamic between the two, but the mood quickly turns melancholy. The repeated refrain "You say the same blood runs through us / Me, though, I maintain that I'm different" underscores the feeling of disconnection between the two, despite their shared history. The final lines of the song, "You say 'gravitational waves move through me' / You sound sedated / I ask you what happened / Years passed and I wish I could show you / Wish I could hold you" are a heart-wrenching plea for connection and intimacy, a yearning for a moment of understanding that may never come.
Overall, "Wish" is a powerful and evocative song that speaks to the bittersweet nature of human connection. Despite its melancholy tone, it offers a glimmer of hope and a sense of catharsis, as the singer is able to articulate their feelings and connect with the listener on a deep emotional level.

His vocals are sick you're all cops
Michael Goelz
this is great! They look NOTHING like I expected. I figured that his distinctive style of vocals was due to being British. I suppose he still could be but now I know they are from NYC.

It's funny to listen to this and then listen to his Empty Country record less than 4 years later where he sings in a more trad. indie pop rock way :P

Wow this dudes vocals and his delivery are horrible...I mean he isn't even in key most of the time. The best thing about this performance by far is the drummer's tshirt
