Calm Inside the Storm
Cyndi Lauper Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can get up
On the right side of the bed
But that won't stop the rain
From coming down on my head
I can live my life
Playing hide and seek
But when I look inside
It's hard to make believe,
Ah ah

'N lately
You seem so far away
I wish I could say something
But I don't know what to say
I can feel your eyes
I don't have to look at you
Boy, discontent
Is-a-sneakin' through

You never really want anything
But what you really need is everything
I'll give you something only life can bring
The calm inside the storm
Love me a little, love me long
Wo yeah
The calm inside the storm
Love me a little, love me long
Don't you know
You should be holding me
But you're all locked inside
Why don't you throw me your keys
I'm like a rockin' ship
On your rollin' sea
You know crash lightnin'
Never frightens me, nah

...You never really wanted
But what you really needed
I want to give you something
Mmm...the calm inside the storm

Love me a little, love me long
Love me a little, love me long

Overall Meaning

In the lyrics of "Calm Inside the Storm" by Cyndi Lauper, the singer discusses how no matter how positive she tries to be or how much she tries to ignore the issues in her life, she cannot escape the storm that is raging around her. She touches on the idea of hiding herself from reality as a form of self-preservation, but ultimately realizes that the only way to find peace in the midst of the storm is to confront it head-on. There is a sense of longing in the lyrics, which is amplified by the repeated phrase "Love me a little, love me long," as if the singer is searching for something more solid and secure in her life.

The lyrics also address the idea of a relationship that is struggling in the midst of the storm. The singer pleads with her partner to see her and to let her in, but recognizes that they are locked in their own turmoil and cannot connect with each other. This is exemplified in the line "You should be holding me / But you're all locked inside," indicating that the partner may be dealing with their own emotional struggles that prevent them from fully engaging with the relationship.

Overall, the lyrics of "Calm Inside the Storm" convey a sense of vulnerability and emotional turmoil, while also suggesting that facing the storm head-on and allowing oneself to be loved and supported is the key to finding peace.

True colors was the first album (I should say cassette) I ever bought. I listened to the entire album constantly while playing Nintendo. Life was simple. I miss those days.
