Born in Queens, New York to Swiss German-American Fred Lauper and Sicilian Italian-American Catrine Dominique, she began her career in a cover band, but soon began performing her own songs (though she almost quit singing altogether due to strained vocal chords in 1977). By 1980 she'd released a rockabilly album on Polydor with the band Blue Angel. Despite much critical acclaim, the album "went lead," as Lauper says, and the band split as Lauper filed for bankruptcy.
In 1983 she started dating her manager David Wolff with whom she released She's So Unusual, a worldwide hit album which made Lauper a household name. A mixture of teen-friendly pop-rock and edgier, almost punky sounds, the album's biggest hit, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, quickly established itself as a female anthem. Lauper won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards of 1984 for her work on the album. Lauper was the first female artist to have four consecutive Hot 100 Top 5 hits from one album.
Subsequent albums (such as True Colors, A Night to Remember, Hat Full of Stars) did not sell as well, but Lauper remains active to the present day and still retains a very strong fan base.
Lauper's latest album Memphis Blues was released in June 2011, premiering at #1 on the Billboard Blues Album Chart where it remained for 14 consecutive weeks. The album also reached #26 on the Billboard Top 200, and was later named the Billboard Blues Album of the year, also earning Lauper a Grammy nomination. This brought her total Grammy nominations to 13 with one win.
Christmas Conga
Cyndi Lauper Lyrics

Let's hang the streamers from the ceiling
Bring out the old cheer
Ring in the new year
And get that Christmas feeling
Chorus:
I wish you joy that never ends
Come on and hold my hips a little longer
As we do the Christmas Conga,
Bonga, bonga, bonga, bonga
Do the Christmas Conga
The old white tree still looks good
And Grandma's angels got me thinking
String up the new lights,
Brighten the cold nights
And get those baubles blinking
Chorus:
I wish you joy that never ends
Happy times with all your friends
Come on and hold my hips a little longer
As we do the Christmas Conga,
Bonga, bonga, bonga, bonga
Do the Christmas Conga
And then we'll put on party hats
As the year comes to a conclusion
Turn on the yule log
Spike up the egg nog
And break those resolutions
Chorus:
I wish you joy that never ends
Happy times with all your friends
Come on and hold my hips a little longer
As we do the Christmas Conga,
Bonga, bonga, bonga, bonga
Do the Christmas Conga
Cyndi Lauper's song "Christmas Conga" talks about the joy of getting into the Christmas spirit and celebrating the end of the year with friends and family. The song begins with the mention of making Christmas punch, hanging streamers from the ceiling, and getting into the "new year" spirit. The song suggests that Christmas is a time to forget the past and welcome a new beginning.
The verse talks about the décor and ornaments, including the "old white tree" and "Grandma's angels." The lyrics suggest hanging new lights to brighten up the holiday season and get the "baubles blinking." This could also refer to the joy that comes from reminiscing about past holiday memories and creating new ones.
The chorus is about joy, happiness, and friendship, with the suggestion to "hold my hips a little longer as we do the Christmas Conga." The lyrics emphasize the spirit of togetherness and the joy of spending time with loved ones. The end of the song suggests dancing to the beat of the Conga, wearing party hats, spiking the egg nog and having a great time together, and breaking those New Year's resolutions.
Overall, the song represents the festive and lively spirit of Christmas and the joy of spending time with loved ones. It also suggests the idea of creating new memories and breaking free from past troubles.
