Born in Queens, New York to Swiss German-American Fred Lauper and Sicilian Italian-American Catrine Dominique, she began her career in a cover band, but soon began performing her own songs (though she almost quit singing altogether due to strained vocal chords in 1977). By 1980 she'd released a rockabilly album on Polydor with the band Blue Angel. Despite much critical acclaim, the album "went lead," as Lauper says, and the band split as Lauper filed for bankruptcy.
In 1983 she started dating her manager David Wolff with whom she released She's So Unusual, a worldwide hit album which made Lauper a household name. A mixture of teen-friendly pop-rock and edgier, almost punky sounds, the album's biggest hit, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, quickly established itself as a female anthem. Lauper won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards of 1984 for her work on the album. Lauper was the first female artist to have four consecutive Hot 100 Top 5 hits from one album.
Subsequent albums (such as True Colors, A Night to Remember, Hat Full of Stars) did not sell as well, but Lauper remains active to the present day and still retains a very strong fan base.
Lauper's latest album Memphis Blues was released in June 2011, premiering at #1 on the Billboard Blues Album Chart where it remained for 14 consecutive weeks. The album also reached #26 on the Billboard Top 200, and was later named the Billboard Blues Album of the year, also earning Lauper a Grammy nomination. This brought her total Grammy nominations to 13 with one win.
Feels Like Christmas

Don't break down and cry
I can be your sweetie
If you be a friend of mine
And I won't be forsaken
If you think thoughts unkind
Just bring home the bacon
And bring it home on time
Hey Louie, can't you see
I couldn't leave you if I tried
Hey Louie, listen to me
We got a thing so dignified
It don't matter if we lived in a shack
Or in a shiny cadillac
It don't matter rich or poor
When love is knocking at your door
It feels like Christmas
Just like Christmas
It feels like Christmas with you...
Hey Louie, life is sweet
I can't be bitter
When you're here with me
Hey Louie, no regrets
Holding on to things
That you ought to forget
Well, it doesn't matter tit for tat
'Cause what you give
You get it back
It don't matter anymore
When love is knocking at your door
It feels like Christmas
Just like Christmas
It feels like Christmas with you,
Everytime I see ya
Everytime I hear ya
Everytime I'm near ya,
I'd be happy
Because it feels like Christmas
Just like Christmas
It feels like Christmas
With you...
The song Feels Like Christmas by Cyndi Lauper is a joyous celebration of love and the feeling that comes with it, especially during the holiday season. The lyrics speak of a relationship between two people, Louie and the singer, and how they have a special connection that feels like Christmas. The opening lines of the song, "If you want to see me, don't break down and cry" suggest that the relationship has had some rocky moments, but the singer still wants to work things out. She tells Louie that she can be his "sweetie" as long as he is a friend to her and doesn't think unkind thoughts.
The chorus of the song, "It feels like Christmas, just like Christmas, it feels like Christmas with you" carries a cheerful, uplifting vibe that perfectly compliments the festive time of the year. The second verse emphasizes that material possessions don't matter when it comes to love, whether one lives in a shack or a shiny Cadillac, as long as they have love, everything else fades in comparison. The final verse emphasizes that love is a sweet thing and that one cannot be bitter when their loved one is around. The song ends on a hopeful note that Louie and the singer's relationship is strong enough to endure anything, and that they will feel like it's Christmas every time they are together.

CL, you’ve got this special ability to hit me right in the feels with your songs! You stole my 11 year old heart in late 1983 and I’m still transfixed with wonder and awe by your singing today. Your foot stomping instrumentation in this song would have earned an appreciative nod by Tom Petty, RIP rock legend, and you picked that mountain dulcimer something fierce! Keep being incredibly awesome, sharing your voice, and helping people out!
