Hat Full of Stars
Cyndi Lauper Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was folding up your letters
Unpacking winter clothes
Searching for my hat
I thought I left it by the door
So I tore around the room
Like a bird without a head
I saw your picture waving back at me
From underneath the bed
From a long, long time ago

When all I had
Was a hat full of stars
The one I'll always treasure
The one that you wore
You loved the look
But you never looked inside
You would have seen us there
You could've seen far
You should've seen the magic
In my hat full of stars

I'm trying to live in the present
But I keep tripping on the past
Finding out reality, well clarity
Comes in dribs and drabs
No we never had the time
For everything we had
So it felt like we had nothing
That's what makes this hat so sad
It was a long, long time ago

When all we had
Was a hat full of stars...
You would have seen us there
You could've seen far
You should've seen the magic
In my hat full of stars

Now whenever I'm alone
And I think I might forget
I wear my lucky hat
Just like a crown up on my head
'Cause all I have
Is a hat full of stars...
If you could see me now
You would've seen far

You should've seen the magic
In my hat full of stars...

Overall Meaning

In "Hat Full of Stars", Cyndi Lauper reminisces about a long-gone relationship while sorting through old winter clothes and letters. Her search for her hat introduces the titular metaphor for what was once an exciting and magical relationship, which becomes a reminder of what she had and lost. The hat full of stars was a representation of the time when everything felt like magic and possibility. The hat provided Lauper comfort and hope, and the starry, mystical quality of the hat symbolizes the potential and passion that had once existed between the two people. The lyrics express regret for the time that was wasted and for the fact that the relationship ended before they were able to fully experience the love they had for each other.

The song's melancholic tone is helped along by the beautiful arrangement and Lauper's belting voice, which convey the longing and disappointment expressed in the lyrics. While "Hat Full of Stars" is largely autobiographical and was written during a difficult period in Lauper's life when her own relationship with her manager was ending, its themes of loss and regret are universally relatable. Ultimately, the song is a reminder to cherish the good times and to honor the memory of those who have touched our lives.

Você adorava a aparência,
Mas nunca olhava pra dentro
Você deveria ter nos visto lá,
Você poderia ter visto muito mais,
Você deveria ter visto a magia
Do meu chapéu cheio de estrelas

@hindyjr_

Eita, eu amo demais mds ❤

"Estou tentando viver o presente
Mas eu continuo tropeçando no passado,
Descobrindo a realidade, é tão claro

I remember very well the release of this album. I bought it immediately. That night I sat alone and heard from head to toe. What a beautiful body of work!!! This song is so beautiful and nostalgic. I always remember my first lover. The lirycs describe the end of our relationship very well. So, everytime I hear that wonderful piece of art ,I see his face smiling at me and I miss that time of our young love. He passed away many years ago ,and I still pray for him.

That was beautiful. My magic now comes from witnessing those moments when someone with nothing helps another with nothing. That moment is magic and will always be so.
