I'm Gonna Be Strong
Cyndi Lauper Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can see
You're slipping away from me
And you're so afraid
That I'll plead with you to stay
But I'm gonna be strong
And let you go your way

Love is gone
There's no sense in holding on
And your pity now
Would be more than I could bare
But I'm gonna be strong
And pretend I don't care

I'm gonna be strong
And stand as tall as I can
I'm gonna be strong
And let you go along
And take it like a man

When you say it's the end
I'll hand you a line
I'll smile and say
Don't you worry I'm fine
But you'll never know darling

After you kiss me goodbye
How I'll break down and cry

My kids are now in their 30's...but back in the day...as a single Dad...Cyndi helped me to get thru being a human when most just weren't. I raised my kids. They know Cyndi by heart to this day. Thank you my beloved. It has been 30 years or more but I am doing good now.

When my partner passed in 1995, this song became my mantra to help me through the dark times.I will forever be indebted to Cyndi Lauper for helping me through what was a devastating time in my life. Thank you for posting this...it is a very important piece of music.

Cyndi deserves to be considered for the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame! No other artist has tackled so many genres with great artistic results. No one has shown constant growth over a 25 year period both as a songwriter, musician, performer and humanitarian. She epitomizes everything rock music and rock musicians should be.

One of the few who can give Madonna singing lessons! And that's not meant as a swipe at Madonna.

I used this song for strength as I battled cancer five and six years ago. Thank you, beautiful Cyndi, for giving my the will and strength to fight. This life brought to you by mammogram and Lauper. XO

A cover of a song she recorded once before with her band before her she's so unusual record. Not sure if she covered it back in 1980, that version used to be on YouTube, not sure anymore.
