The World Is Stone
Cyndi Lauper Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stone, the world is stone
It's no trick of the light
It's hard on the soul
Stone, the world is stone
Cold to the touch
And hard on the soul
In the gray of the streets
In the neon unknown
I look for a sign
That I'm not on my own
That I'm not here alone
As the still of the night
And the choke of the air
And the winner's delight
And the loser's despair
Closes in left and right
I would love not to care
Stone, the world is stone
from a faraway look
Without stars in my eyes
Through the halls of the rich
And the flats of the poor
Wherever I go
There's no warmth anymore
There's no love anymore
So I turn on my heels
I'm declining the fall
I've had all I can take
With my back to the wall
Tell the world I'm not in
I'm not taking the call
Stone, the world is stone
But I saw it once
With the stars in my eyes
When each color rang out
In a thunderous chrome
It's no trick of the light

I can't find my way home
In a world of stone

Overall Meaning

In this song, Cyndi Lauper paints a bleak picture of the world around her. She repeats the phrase "the world is stone" throughout the lyrics to emphasize the hardness of the world and how it takes a toll on the soul. The absence of warmth and love in the world is highlighted through the descriptions of the gray streets, neon signs, and the halls of the rich and flats of the poor. The singer looks for a sign that they are not alone but finds none. The stillness of the night, choke of the air, and the emotions of winners and losers further close in and push the singer to a point of no return. The only recourse is to turn down any calls and not engage, to avoid hitting rock bottom. However, in a brief moment, there is a glimmer of hope when she remembers a time when the world was full of color and vibrancy, with stars in her eyes. Yet, she cannot find her way back.

The lyrics can be interpreted in various ways. Some may see it as a commentary on the state of the world and how it can be harsh and unrelenting. It can also be seen as a reflection of the struggles of a person who feels isolated and alone in a seemingly heartless world. The use of stones as a metaphor captures the stark reality of life but also the lack of hope and warmth that a person needs to survive.

I'm ignoring the world's demands and expectations.

But I saw it once
There was a time when I felt differently,

With the stars in my eyes
When I was full of hope and optimism,

When each color rang out
When the world was vibrant and full of life,

In a thunderous chrome
Amidst the excitement and energy of the world,

I can't find my way home
But now, I feel lost and unable to return to that state of mind.

In a world of stone
In this world that has become cold, hard, and unfeeling.

I love this tune originally sung by Quebequois singer Fabienne Thibeault in the French show Starmania (1978). "Le monde est stone" is very well known in Quebec and European francophonic countries, and has never left the top most loved songs ever since. Cyndi gives it a beautiful English version. Love you, Cyndi Lauper 💜

@John D indeed québécoise is feminine for québécois.Very well pronounced on Reverso by the way. From Algonquin native language Kebec which means ''where the river narrows'' and where Quebec city was built.
