Lazy Afternoon
Cyrille Aimée Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's a lazy afternoon
And the beetle bugs are zoomin'
And the tulip trees are bloomin'
And there ain't another human in view
But us two

It's a lazy afternoon
And the farmer leaves his reapin'
And the meadow cows are sleepin'
And the speckled trouts stop leapin' up stream
As we dream

A far pink cloud hangs over the hill
Unfolding like a rose
If you hold my hand and sit real still
You can hear the grass as it grows

It's a hazy afternoon
And I know a place that's quiet, except for daisies running riots
And there's no one passing by it to see
Come spend this lazy afternoon with me

A far pink cloud hangs over the hill
Unfolding like a rose
If you hold my hand and sit real still
You can hear the grass as it grows

It's a lazy afternoon
And my cakes were never richer
And my rocking chair will fit ya

And I've made a tasty pitcher of tea
Come spend this lazy afternoon with me

Overall Meaning

In Cyrille Aimée's "Lazy Afternoon," the lyrics paint a picture of a peaceful and carefree moment in time where the only two beings are the singer and the one she's addressing. The song's first verse highlights the serenity of the natural surroundings, with beetle bugs zooming around, tulip trees blooming, and no other humans in view. Then, the singer shifts to a more relaxed tone in the second verse, mentioning that even the farmer has stopped his work, and the animals are napping as they dream. She makes a beautiful simile, "A far pink cloud hangs over the hill/Unfolding like a rose," which symbolizes the beauty and tranquility of this moment. The final verse suggests an invitation to join her for a relaxing afternoon of cakes, rocker chairs, and a pitcher of tea.

The song's lyrics talk about the beauty of our surroundings that we often fail to appreciate. The song's central theme invites us to take a moment to appreciate our surroundings and make the most of them. The singer's invitation to join her for a lazy afternoon is a call to a slower pace of living, a chance to take a break from the daily hustle and bustle, and cherish the little moments we often overlook.

You get points for just picking this tune to cover. I still think June Christy's version is the best, but she had Pete Rugolo doing his hypnotic string arrangement. However, you only have the four musicians and the provided a great backing for your voice. Give Christy's version if you haven't heard it yet. Pat Suzuki's cover is good too.

Lovely, But check the Tina May version for the quietest, laziest, most hauntingly half-keyed rendition.
