So Many People
Cyrille Aimée Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I said the man for me
Must have a castle
A man of means he'd be
A man of fame
And then I met a man
Who hadn't any
Without a penny
To his name
I had to go and fall
For so much less than
What I had planned from all
The magazines
I should be good and sore
What am I happy for?
I guess the man means more
Than the means

So many people in the world
And what can they do?
They'll never know love
Like my love for you
So many people laugh
At what they don't know
But that's their concern
If just a few, say
Half a million or so
Could see us

They'd learn

So many people in the world
Don't know what they've missed
They'd never believe
Such joy could exist
And if they tell us it's a thing we'll outgrow
They're jealous as they can be
That with so many people in the world
You love me

So many people in the world
Don't know what they've missed
They'd never believe
Such joy could exist
And if they tell us it's a thing we'll outgrow
They're jealous as they can be

That with so many people in the world
You love me

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Cyrille Aimée's So Many People sets up a narrative of a person who has certain expectations of the kind of man they want - one with money and fame. The singer meets someone who does not fit into these expectations but still falls for him. This is exemplified by the line "I had to go and fall for so much less than what I had planned from all the magazines". The singer realizes that love is more important than materialistic things and accepts the man despite his lack of wealth. This realization is highlighted in the line "I guess the man means more than the means".

The chorus of the song speaks to the uniqueness and beauty of the love shared between the singer and their partner. They assert that so many people in the world will never know a love like theirs. They believe that others would understand if only they could see them together. They state that "they'd learn" if "half a million or so" could witness their love. The second part of the chorus continues to emphasize the exclusivity of their love by claiming that "they'd never believe such joy could exist" and that those who try to refute their love are merely "jealous".

So Many People is ultimately a song about the power of love and how it is often unexpected and cannot be limited to material possessions. The song is a testament to the beauty of love that exists outside societal norms and expectations.
