Stand By Me
Cyrille Aimée & friends Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Run that by me one more time
To make sure that I heard you right
I hope you don't expect me to believe that line
I might be crazy, but I ain't dumb
And I know a lie when I hear one
Would you run that by me one more time?
Well, you're late again, I see
What's your excuse this time?
Don't you try to kiss and make up
When you smell so strong from wine
Well, I'm not late, the clock is wrong
You need to wind Big Ben
Honey, that's not wine you smell
That's aftershave for men
Would you run that by me one more time?
What happened to the money
I gave you to pay the rent?
The rent is overdue
And we ain't got one red cent
I put it in the cookie jar
The day you brought it home
One day when I came back from town

I looked and I'll be dogged if that money wasn't gone!
Would you run that by me one more time?

Overall Meaning

In Cyrille Aimée & friends' version of "Stand By Me," the singer begins by requesting that the other person repeat something to her, not because she misheard them, but because she finds it difficult to believe the lie they just told her. She reveals that she may be crazy, but she is not foolish enough to accept anything without question. The singer questions the other person's motives and continues her interrogation, wanting to know why they are late and calling them out on their excuses. She then challenges them on why they smell of wine, to which they reply with an absurd statement about it being aftershave. The singer is not fooled and demands that they explain themselves once again.

As the song progresses, the singer asks about money given to the other person to pay the rent but finds out that the rent is now overdue and the money is gone. The other person claims to have put it in the cookie jar, but it is clear to the singer that they are lying. The song title, "Stand By Me," is ironically juxtaposed against the dishonesty and mistrust between the two people.

If you haven't seen Cyrille live in concert, you are missing out on one of the greatest singers alive. So talented and such a nice person. The world is a better place because Cyrille in in it.

@JoeMandell-

She recently did a cover of 'La Vie en Rose' with the Emmet Cohen Trio. The performance is an amazing mix of New Orleans Jazz and Swing. 🎶

@Nemfis05

@Aristo07

@Nemfis05

Saludos!! :)
