- Well, the "ideal" of gothic subculture is like: "How your wise grandfather could teach you about life in music and aesthetics, on its edge of death"
... Exactly. Is the "Post-Punk"; once Punk will saw at their front, a beyond reach will to go into the world and do whatever it needs to change for better... and get in real that couldnt be done.
At the 60's, the Hippies could at some extension undermine at least a little to reinforce USA to make war at Vietnam. At least in human resources. At the 70's, the Punks imagined that Hippies should go for more agressive terms, since the Governments were indeed agressive. And this lead to the 80's, where appeared even the good acts of crowd manifestations would have limits too shy for real change. Then comes this; "Whatever then, lets make music and live up until our death with those gruesome problems that appears people are happy with them".
Dont read me wrong: please, do your social part, for we dont need anything worse then what we have, but this the extention of what we can get.
Do whatever we can to make our community better, and the enviroment also. Preserve wildlife, etc...you know the drill.
The crucial point is the self-reflection, and how to become a better person, if people do this, and live up their freedom at the better expression of it, ...and this is how you get the "Gothics are self-conscious Punks".
See; the dark cloths and make up is a clear statement against the bad things of society. - Machism, Prejudice, Judgement only by the looks, create a " normal " ...
Is like; you dress up dark to say to people sad and marginal, that with you, they'll be well treated. Like a charismatic "Addams Family" on the neighborhood.
Welcome and Enjoy, Gothic isnt much Mistery, in the end is how to have fun and last long. You see, is one of the few subcultures that can endure the passage of time, because the foundation is solid.
