Hark The Herald Angels Sing
D.J. Chill Out Christmas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled

Joyful, all ye nations, rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim
Christ is born in Bethlehem
Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King

Christ, by highest heaven adored
Christ, the everlasting Lord
Late in time behold him come
Offspring of the Virgin's womb

Joyful, all ye nations, rise
Join the triumph of the skies
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel!
Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King

Hail the Heaven-born
Prince of Peace
Hail the Son of Righteousness
Light and life to all He brings
Risen with healing in His wings

Joyful, all ye nations, rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim
Christ is born in Bethlehem

Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King

Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King

Overall Meaning

The song "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" is a Christmas carol that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. The first stanza of the song begins with the command to listen to the message declared by the herald angels, which is followed by the announcement of the birth of the new-born king. The second and third stanzas exalt Christ, emphasizing that He is worthy of highest heaven's adoration, and that He is the Prince of Peace, the Son of Righteousness, and the bringer of light and life to all. The final stanza repeats the chorus and reminds us that Christ was born in Bethlehem, fulfilling the prophecy of the Old Testament and bringing hope to all who believe.

The song is based on a hymn written by Charles Wesley (brother of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism) in 1739, but the melody we know today was composed by Felix Mendelssohn in 1840. Interestingly, Mendelssohn wrote the melody for a cantata to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Johann Gutenberg's invention of the printing press, and had no intention of it being used for a Christmas carol. However, in 1855, William Cummings, a British musician and editor, combined Wesley's lyrics with Mendelssohn's melody and the hymn became popular as a Christmas carol.
