Out of control

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to D.N.E.'s song "Out of Control" depict a young, Black boy who is thrust into the adult world of hustling and dealing drugs at an early age, forced to make difficult choices just to survive. The opening lines speak to the hardships he faced, "Pushed in the game at a young age, feel me touch me as I turn the page." He talks about how he dropped out of school at just eleven years old and got involved in a life of crime, "My scratch is smellin' sour and it's stinkin', got a n**** seriously thinkin' how can I kill this odor and purchase a Lincoln?" The lyrics paint a vivid picture of poverty, drugs, and violence, describing how the singer would rather sell drugs than work minimum wage flipping patties. He talks about how he came from an ugly and plucked background, but his partners showed him love and support, "My partners used to be plucked and ugly, hanging around them old squeegee boys, man, them the motherfuckers that had love for me, they straight cut for me, deal me, touch me, L-O-V-E."

The chorus, "Sittin' in my livin' room, thinkin' of a master plan, tryin' to find a way out, then I snatch the scratch and laugh" suggests the character is looking to escape the desperate circumstances that led him into a life of hustling. He speaks of painting himself a picture of a better life, but the lure of easy money keeps him trapped in the cycle, "So I painted me a picture of a life to make a dream, can you feel me now ballin' outta control?" The song's overall theme deals with the struggle for survival and the effects it can have on a young person's life.
