Jerusalem
D.O.G. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And did those feet in ancient time,
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the Holy Lamb of God
on England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among those dark Satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of Fire!

I will not cease from mental fight;
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand

Til we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to D.O.G.'s song "Jerusalem" are a poetic and patriotic call to create a better England. The opening lines ask if Jesus himself had walked upon the mountains of England and if the holy lamb had grazed on the pastures of that "pleasant land." The author is making a comparison between the ancient and divine Jerusalem, which is said to have been built as the home of the Lord and the physical land of England, which is supposed to be a pleasant and peaceful place.

The next stanza describes the presence of the divine on England's "clouded hills" and the possibility of building a new Jerusalem amongst the dark satanic mills. This line may refer to the dark, industrial landscape of 19th century England which was ruining the natural beauty of the land. The author is urging his fellow countrymen to build a better England by invoking the divine and using all the tools at their disposal.

The final stanza is an invocation to bring forward the tools needed to build this new Jerusalem, including a bow of burning gold, arrows of desire, and a chariot of fire. The author will not rest until the mental fight is won and the vision of a better England is brought to reality. So, the song is a call to all the people of England to work together to create a brighter future and not just rely on divine intervention.
