Testamento
D.Rodriguez Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Y no se sabe que mañana
Yo voy a hacer mi testamento
A repartir lo que me falta
Pues lo que tuve ya está hecho
Ya está abrigado, ya está en casa
Yo voy a hacer mi testamento
The song "Testamento" by D. Rodriguez is a deep and introspective piece about the inevitability of death and the things that we leave behind. The first stanza exemplifies this with the line "Como la muerte anda en secreto y no se sabe que mañana" (Like death walks in secret and we don't know what tomorrow brings). The singer is left with the need to create his testament, to leave behind what he still has; things that are already achieved and precious to him like his home are already accounted for. The sense of closure in this stanza is palpable.
The following stanzas all introduce different forms of debts that the singer has towards different aspects of his life, such as to the smile of a spring, to his mistakes, to the lies he's told, to the borders that define him, to his own mortality, among others. The debts the singer references are not financial, but rather spiritual or philosophical. These debts are also not literal, but rather represent the things that the singer has yet to accomplish in his life. The overall message of the song seems to be about the importance of reflecting on one's own life, of taking inventory of the things that matter most before it's too late. It's a reminder to appreciate and to give back to the things that have given us purpose and meaning.
