I am old enough to have seen the Narrows Bridge in HS Science class and in Trigonometry class both stills , video and on our Text books . The lesson was that you need to learn science , technology and mathematics to make things work correctly in our modern world .

@Henry Chang i know that, but theres nothing to explain a vibration unless its piers are eroding out. The currents will erode a hole downstream of the piers, and require stone packing to prevent collapse. Thats quite common if things are not maintained. Strong currents increase the risks of it occurring and this looks more like that.

Unfortunately it is not a fake. I am from Russia, and it was big story about this bridge in Volgograd. All media was talking about it. It is very expensive bridge, and fault engineering, as well as corruption, was blamed for this.

This is the “dancing bridge of Wolgograd“ which was since fixed by Maurer Söhne Structural Protection Systems Division... this was a very important bridge, and lucky for them that dampeners were installed in time.

The vibrations are due to the bridge's frequency being able to be met and excited through natural external force like air, and is a great concern with slender steel bridges.

@Alchemist XP Well there’s a point that it becomes hazardous, but actually yes it’s supposed to do this. If bridges were designed to be perfectly rigid, they would all crumble to pieces and fall to the earth. This is exactly what happened to one bridge in the US about 50 or so years ago, can’t remember the name. It was engineered to not give whatsoever and then it failed about 5 years after it was built and killed a few people. If your ever on a bridge, you’ll notice they have teeth like connections on them which allows the bridge to sway and transfer mechanical energy rather than absorb it. This movement actually happens on bridge very often, albeit idk if it’s actually this severe. I’d say this bridge is swaying a bit too much, but yea they are supposed to move.

What you see here is the “product” of “value Engineering.” Everything was designed right. The government, in this case Mother Russia, decided to make the cables smaller, the steel thinner, and the joists just a little bit smaller so the corrupt individuals would have some money left over for a new dasha (sp) and some vodka for a new house party!!!!!

Same thing happened in Washington state years ago at the Tacoma Narrows bridge that self destructed in a gale. The wind caused Karmon Vortexes to form in the flow pattern and make it resonate just like reeds in wind instruments or halyards on a sailing ship.

This is very possible from an engineering point of view. Check out one of the most famous examples - Gallopin' Gertie - the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in WA. It experienced much worse flexing in a 1940 strong wind storm. All it takes with a suspension bridge like this is for the harmonics of the wind to match that of the bridge flexing for long enough & bye bye bridge.Can't post a link on YT, so search for: Tacoma Narrows Bridge Collapse "Gallopin' Gertie"

Well, that's one way to see it :-) In essence, they now calculate their thing so that the road lifts when it's windy. It eases the strain on the wires. They also make sure that the bridge doesn't enter this resonnant state. I live close to such bridges, and they just don't move, or in such a way that they do not enter such a periodic pattern

This is a phenomenon known as resonance, that is the frequency of the wind equals the frequency of the bridge( material) causing it to vibrate, in this case to oscillate with extremely large amplitude. Any longer and it would have been started to fall apart but the wind most likely changed

Since the river water flow looks regular, the possibility for this waving can only be provoked by the instability of the piliers itself that aren’t laying on solid rock bed.

It's like the clip I saw on how the right mechanical frequency (whether 'sound' waves - which are really just air-pressure waves - or earth quake waves) can make solid objects behave somewhat as liquids. The clip I saw produced the same effect on an empty wine glass with the right sound frequency. It's called the theory of resonance and I think Nikola Tesla was the first to experiment with it (maybe even discovered it).

Jesus!! The video's probably for real, though, the telephoto shot distorting movement and distance to make it appear more drastic than it really is. The pedestrian didn't seem to have a problem with it and I suspect the vehicles were held back as a precaution rather than a necessity. However, I wasn't there, so can't be sure.

This is because of structural dynamics!! When we engineers create systems, sometimes there are eigenvalues of the system that can be excited by a specific input, in this case the pressure from wind blowing at a certain speed!

What is interesting is this is a wonderful analogy to power systems. When you think about resonance in power flows that can be excited by changes in load, or even variable sources of power (i.e. wind and solar)... you start to understand why renewable energy is such a bad thing to have on the grid!

Well, you are not the first to react to my comment this way… In a sense, you may be right, cause the bridge didn't collapse and seems to have withstood (?) the wind unscathed. Such torsions however are not welcomed. They shouldn't be present in the first place ! I've read a few bits here and there about bridges like this, and they now have ways to avoid them. They for instance shape the road like an inverted aircraft's wing.

We built a bridge in my city that had the same problem. Poor design led to this shaking and bending in strong winds. Engineers got together and couple days later had a new design to add on that would stop it. It isn't fake LOL

Cut and paste from description: "The shaking was so severe it caused vehicles to career into the opposite lane..." I've watched enough Russian dashcam footage to know shaking is not required for Russian drivers to go into the opposing lane, pedestrians, buildings or rivers. It just happens.

This is not fake; it's a fluke in the bridge's construction. It happens once in a long time. Research the Tacoma Narrows Bridge to see a more extreme example--plus footage of the whole thing ripping apart.

He did say however, although the initial precursors and causes were different, the rules of nature still apply and we just call them this or that so we can talk about them intelligently.
