His first self-released record—2009's LP How 2 Deal and 2008's EP When You're Lonely, Everybody's a Celebrity (Moodgadget)—were steeped in '80s electro and Italo Disco and yet oddly melancholic, like hearing someone else's dance party through a wall, or a pop tune playing from the bottom of a swimming pool. After contributing to Passion Pit's full-length breakthrough Manners, Gookin self-released 2010's From Here the Wall of Undoing EP, where he took a different tack. He pushed his drums and vocals to the forefront, adopting a psychedelic, rock-driven, maximalist approach à la Dan Deacon. Meanwhile, he developed his kinetic live show to match, both locally and on the road with Mux Mool.
In 2011, D. Gookin returns with Spiral Style, his most raw and undiluted work to date. Inspired in no particular order by slam-dancing, Fat Boy Slim, general grooviness, vocoders, PacSun, and the feeling of freedom that comes with a wandering mind, the record covers a broad swath of styles while staying true to Gookin's goal. From the anthemic electronica of opener "Way 2 Grow," to the beaming optimism of "Spirit Link," to the chopped chipmunk soul of closer "Stealing Sun Chips," the Spiral Style EP is a candy-coated feel-good affair that effectively wrings good vibes out of the bad stuff that too often slows us down.

Come closer, fear no distance...
There's one thing that I need,
Your promise to proceed!
Sell me your soul,
And I'll bring you power!
Sell me your soul,
It's black magic, bad magic!
It's black magic, bad magic!
Don't stop! D... D... Don't stop!
Sell me your soul,
And I'll bring you power!
Sell me your soul,
And darkness will rule!
It's black magic, bad magic!
It's black magic, bad magic!
In D. Gookin's song Black Magic, the lyrics revolve around the idea of trading one's soul for power and the consequences that come with it. The opening lines, "To get in my existence... Come closer, fear no distance...", may suggest that the singer is someone of great power or influence, and they are inviting someone to join them. However, the next line, "There's one thing that I need, Your promise to proceed!" reveals that this invitation comes at a cost - the other person must promise to proceed with selling their soul.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the darkness and danger associated with black magic. The lines "Sell me your soul, And darkness will rule!" suggests that by trading one's soul, they are inviting darkness into their life. The repetition of the phrase "It's black magic, bad magic!" further emphasizes this point. The singer seems to be urging the other person to continue down this path, repeating "Don't stop!" as if they are trying to convince the other person to ignore any doubts they may have.
Overall, the lyrics of Black Magic seem to be cautioning against the dangers of seeking power through dark means. The singer is portrayed as someone who has already made this trade and is now trying to persuade someone else to follow in their footsteps. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the darkness and danger associated with black magic, suggesting that this is not a path to be taken lightly.
