I Remember
D. Rice Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I remember it well
The first time that I saw
Your head around the door
'Cause mine stopped working

I remember it well
There was wet in your hair
I was stood in the stairs
And time stopped moving

I want you here tonight
I want you here
'Cause I can't believe what I found
Oh, and you're here and I want you here
Nothing is taking me down, down, down

I remember it well
Taxied out of a storm
To watch you perform
And my ships were sailing

I remember it well
I was stood in your line
And your mouth, your mouth, your mind

I want you here tonight
I want you here
'Cause I can't believe what I found
Oh, and you're here and I want you here
Nothing is taking me down, down, down

Except you my love.
Except you my love

Come all ye lost
Dive into moss
I hope that my sanity covers the cost
To remove the stain of my love
Paper maché

Come all ye reborn
Blow off my horn
I'm driving real hard
This is love, this is porn
God will forgive me
But I, I whip myself with scorn, scorn

I want to hear what you have to say about me
Hear if you're gonna live without me
I want to hear what you want
I remember December
And I want to hear what you have to say about me
Hear if you're gonna live without me

I want to hear what you want
What the hell do you want?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to D. Rice's song "I Remember" tell a story of a person recalling their memories of meeting someone they were attracted to. The first verse describes the moment when they first saw the person, and how everything else seemed to fade away. The second verse describes another memory of watching this person perform, and being captivated by their presence. Throughout the song, the singer expresses their desire for this person, stating that they can't believe they found them and nothing can bring them down except for the person themselves.

The chorus repeats the desire for the person to be there with the singer, showing just how important this individual is to them. The lines "Except you my love" convey that the only thing they need in this world is this person. The following verses and bridge explore different themes of love, from vulnerability to forgiveness, showcasing the complexity of the relationship. The bridge also features an interesting juxtaposition of "sanity" and "paper maché", as well as "love" and "porn".

I think this song deserves a bit more context to explain its intensity:

This is a fight! a dialog between two lovers who found out that one is cheating on the other:
Lisa's verse is the cheated on. She's calm. Nostalgic. Strong. But in disbelief. Every word is like a bullet to her counter part.
Damien's verse is the cheater. He's confused. Acknowledging. Regretting. But angry, not on his counter part. On himself.

She mentions their first look, day, date... He mentions their last spark, that moment that ruined everything
She wants peace, it's over... He wants blame, a fight, a reaction.

This is one of the greatest poetries of modern world.

You need to check out the different version of It Takes A Lot to Know a Man.

It's Lisa-less. But incredible.

Listen to:
The album recording.
The black and white acapella version - "one to one."
The live multi-instrument version.

All three are incredible in a different way

Damian rice, one of the most underrated artists of the past 20 years

Henrik Thon

Damien Rice is my all time favorite artist when it comes to live performances. Masterful live performer.

AlphaMediaLabs

All time favorite artists. I’ve seen him and Lisa together once, and him solo a few more times. His first album, O, has been on repeat since I discovered him in 2005.

daftgowk

@AlphaMediaLabs Damien Rice, M Ward, Iron and wine... The mad guitar skills, lyrical genius and tone to the voices are something special

Andy Walters

Only ‘underrated’ if you measure success by celebrity, money and ‘likes’ on social media. I’m sure he’s fine with where he is right now.

"O" and "9" are the two albums I've listened to the most in my life. Absolutely love them. The only thing that slightly annoys me is that Lisa doesn't get enough official credit. So much more than backing vocals and should at least have gotten a "feat. Lisa Hannigan" on some of the songs.

Michael Palmisano

She's one of my very favorites.

Jopeymess Music

In fairness, Damien mentioned in a few different interviews over the years he wanted to but he had such a massive ego at the time of recording them that official channels were the only way they were even talking to eachother. So it was label pressure that official credit isn't given.
