We loved our time in Sumatra but it was time for our next adventure. Lombok was our destination but to get there we had to take planes, buses and ferries. The local ferry was an awesome experience and we were rewarded for our slow travel style by getting the opportunity to meet and talk to heaps of friendly people. Has anyone else crossed from Bali to Lombok on the local ferry?

I'm from NZ and wanna go to Lombok and Gili T next year. How do you book the ferry tickets, just show up? And once arrived, how do you get around the island? I've heard transport is difficult there

Transport around Lombok is a bit of a pain, yes. Which ferry do you want? I think you should book fast ferries, but the slow very shouldn't ever book out. The easiest way to get anywhere is to get a company in Bali or Lombok that does all the transfers. It's expensive relative to doing it yourself but very easy. To get around Lombok its pretty much shared shuttle tickets or grab/ taxis. Maybe rent a scooter, but then its no use on Gili-T.
