The three met while they were young men at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. They formed the band dc Talk (a reference to Washington D.C., but later marketed as 'decent Christian talk' by their label) and, as of the year 2000, spent twelve solid years together, performing all over the world, recording 6 albums, and earning many awards, including 4 Grammy awards.
Their music, aimed at a younger audience, combined hip-hop, rap, and R&B sensibilities and filled a gap in 1980s Christian Music and gave them a unique niche. Their first three albums, DC Talk, Nu Thang, and Free at Last started from their rap/hip-hop roots but increasingly included melodic vocal rock influences. Their 1995 studio album, Jesus Freak, continued this musical evolution by eshewing almost all rap elements and adopting a harder modern rock/grunge sound on many songs, especially the title track. Their most recent studio album, Supernatural, draws on their previous efforts while moving towards mainstream pop stylings.
Their signature sound in all albums is their use of the three members' different vocal skills separately and together. They are often lauded for their lyrical sophistication, addressing many themes in Christian theology, faith, and practice.
After more than ten years together as a group, they are taking a break in recording together to pursue their own activities outside of the band, and launch solo careers in recording music. Michael Tait formed his own band, Tait, and has most recently served as the frontman for Newsboys. Toby McKeehan has released music under the name Tobymac, and has been the most sucessful of the three. Kevin Max has released two solo albums of his own.

So many things to torment me
And as I stumble down this road it takes a toll
These days and nights I turn to You
No human hand can pull me through
No cosmic force or magic brew will ever do
But I can see it coming
'Cause I can feel Your power
Surging through the whole of me
God is there and He is watching
He tells me all is well (it's supernatural)
God is there, there's no denying
He's supernatural (it's supernatural)
Supernatural
Beyond this physical terrain
There's an invisible domain
Where angels battle over souls in vast array
But down on earth is where I am
No wings to fly, no place to stand
Here on my knees I am a stranger in this land
I need an intervention
A touch of providence
It goes beyond religion
To my very circumstance
God is there and He is watching
He tells me all is well (it's supernatural)
God is there, there's no denying
He's supernatural (it's supernatural)
Supernatural
God is there and He is watching
The signs are everywhere (the signs are everywhere)
God is there, there's no denying
It's supernatural (it's supernatural)
Supernatural
In six days, the universe was made
Supernatural
And from the dead a man was raised
Supernatural
They say He walked across the waves
Supernatural
And I'll believe it to my grave
But I can see You coming
You're not so far away
'Cause I can feel Your power
Surging through the whole of me
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
(God is supernatural)
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
God is there and He is watching
He tells me all is well (it's supernatural)
God is there, there's no denying
He's supernatural (it's supernatural)
Supernatural
(Some things just can't be explained)
The lyrics to DC Talk's song "Supernatural" describe the struggles of living in a world filled with pain and suffering, but also the hope that comes from turning to God for comfort and guidance. The singer describes feeling tormented by the many difficulties of life, but finding solace in the belief that there is a higher power watching over everything.
The song acknowledges the existence of an invisible spiritual realm where good and evil forces battle over human souls, but emphasizes that even though we may feel like strangers in this world, we are not alone. The singer expresses a need for divine intervention in their life, recognizing that there are some things that even religion cannot answer.
The chorus repeats the phrase "God is there, he's supernatural", emphasizing the idea that there are forces at work beyond human understanding. The song draws on biblical stories of supernatural events, from the creation of the universe to the resurrection of Jesus, to reinforce the belief that God's power is omnipotent.
Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of both awe and comfort in the face of life's challenges, reminding listeners that there is a higher power at work in the world.
