Country Roads
DENVER JOHN Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, growin' like a breeze
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
All my memories gather 'round her
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
I hear her voice in the mornin' hour, she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
Drivin' down the road, I get a feelin'
That I should've been home yesterday, yesterday
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
Take me home, down country roads
Take me home, down country roads
The lyrics of "Country Roads" by John Denver convey a strong sense of longing for a place that is deeply familiar and holds an emotional connection for the singer. The opening lines of the song set the scene in West Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, describing a place that feels timeless and ancient, older than the trees themselves. But despite this sense of age and tradition, the singer also recognizes that life is constantly evolving and changing, growing like a breeze even as the mountains remain steadfast.
As the song continues, the emotional pull of this place becomes even more clear. The memories of the singer's past gather around him like a comforting embrace, while specific details add depth and texture to the portrait of his home. We learn about the miners who work the land and the "misty taste" of moonshine, details that help to bring this place to life.
Ultimately, though, it's the sense of yearning that defines "Country Roads." The chorus echoes this feeling over and over again, with each repetition amplifying the singer's sense of longing. Through it all, he can hear the "voice" of his home calling to him, urging him to return to the place where he truly belongs.

@@ElPatron42069 And as a brit, I think it's fair to say the closest thing we have to old WV is a little place you might not have heard of, we call it Scotland, more of a local legend than anything really.
