Soul
DJ Die Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We are standing here at the edge of time...
Cold...
Our road was paved to the edge of time...
Steel... Sparks...
Come with me now to the edge of time...
Does anyone remember who I am?

In a few moments you will have an experience which will seem completely real...
It will be the result of your subconscious fears, transformed to your conscious awareness...
You have 5 seconds to terminate this tape...
5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

Has everybody got a place to hide?
...is everybody inside?
Has everybody got a place to hide?
...is everybody inside?

There's a game out there, and the stakes are high.
And the guy who runs it figures the averages all day long, and all night...
Once in a while he let's you steal a pot,
But if you stay in the game long enough, you've got to lose,
And once you've lost, there's no way back...
No way at all...

The time has come

Darkness!
Darkness! darkness! darkness!
Da-da-da-da-darkness!

The time has come
The time has come

Can you feel this?

What is that buzzing?
Are you now, or have you ever, moved slowly?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of DJ Die's song "Soul" seem to be deeply introspective and philosophical. The first lines, "We are standing here at the edge of time/Cold/Our road was paved to the edge of time/Steel...Sparks..." suggest the idea of standing at the precipice of change, a transition from one state of being to another that may be cold and fear-inducing. The use of the imagery of steel sparks creates a sense of danger or uncertainty - something that's both sharp and unpredictable.

"Come with me now to the edge of time/Does anyone remember who I am?" Here, the artist seems to be inviting the listener to join him on the journey, perhaps to explore this moment of transition together. Asking "Does anyone remember who I am?" is a bit of a rhetorical question, since it's hard to imagine who he would be referring to. Perhaps it's just another way of emphasizing the disorienting, existential moment they find themselves in.

The lyrics that follow, "In a few moments you will have an experience which will seem completely real...It will be the result of your subconscious fears, transformed to your conscious awareness...You have 5 seconds to terminate this tape...5, 4, 3, 2, 1." seem to shift the perspective from the artist to the listener. The use of the words "subconscious fears" suggest that the experience about to occur may be unsettling or frightening, and the countdown to "terminate this tape" hints at the idea that the listener may have some control over this experience - they can choose to embrace it, or to avoid it.

"Has everybody got a place to hide?...is everybody inside?" The repetition of this line is somewhat ominous, as if to suggest that something is coming, and everyone needs to be aware of it. It's unclear exactly what this something might be - perhaps it's the looming transition the artist referenced earlier, or perhaps it's something more menacing.

"There's a game out there, and the stakes are high...And once you've lost, there's no way back...No way at all..." This verse seems to be exploring the idea of fate or destiny, that there's a "game" with consequences that can't be avoided. The "stakes are high" line creates a sense of danger, and the final lines suggest that the outcome of the game is absolute - once you've lost, there's no path back.

"The time has come/Darkness! Darkness! darkness! darkness!/Da-da-da-da-darkness!/The time has come/The time has come/Can you feel this?/What is that buzzing?/Are you now, or have you ever, moved slowly?" The repetition of "the time has come" creates an anticipation, something is about to happen. The repetition of "darkness" emphasizes the idea of impending danger, and the "buzzing" sensation suggests that something is approaching. The final line, "Are you now, or have you ever, moved slowly?" is a bit of a curious one - perhaps it's a rhetorical question about whether we are living our lives fully and energetically enough, or whether we are holding ourselves back.

Overall, the lyrics of Soul are quite enigmatic - they touch on themes of fate, destiny, and the passage of time, but without being too specific. The use of imagery and repetition creates a sense of anticipation and danger.
