Give It Up
DJ Freaky & MC Nas-D Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somebody mentioned a new start
Keeping me off of the old track
Try and take showers in Prozac
Just to see how fast
I close the door to the past
I used to be looking for a reason
I used to have time to explain
Now I'm going to fast for conditions
Outta my lane - I'm going too fast to change

If it's a good day to give it up
Then I surrender
Call it a day and call the cops
Repeat offender...

Never had trouble with balance
Wasn't a thing I couldn't fit
I used to be up for the challenge
From a hero a monster to a great piece of shit

If it's a good day to give it up
Then I surrender
Call it a day and call the cops
Repeat offender...
If it's a good day to give it up,
If there was someone to make me stop,
If there's a good way to call it off
Then I surrender....

Do you still take part yeah do you still have dreams in this frozen state
You're robbed of a future that always yeah always arrives too late...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to DJ Freaky & MC Nas-D's song "Give It Up" suggest a sense of self-awareness and acceptance of one's own flaws and shortcomings. The first verse speaks to the idea of starting fresh, leaving the past behind, and attempting to find some sort of inner peace by using Prozac as a metaphorical means of distancing oneself from the past. The lines "I used to be looking for a reason, I used to have time to explain, now I'm going too fast for conditions, outta my lane - I'm going too fast to change" implies that the persona has grown tired of constantly explaining their actions and is now willingly moving past their problems without waiting for a force to help them change.

The second verse speaks to a change in character, the persona "never had trouble with balance," and could never be brought down. However, now the persona is accepting their downfall and seeing themselves as a "great piece of shit". The chorus "If it's a good day to give it up, then I surrender, call it a day and call the cops, repeat offender" shows the acceptance of their faults and the willingness to give up on their negative ways to create a better version of themselves, even if they have done it multiple times in the past. The last two lines, "Do you still take part yeah do you still have dreams in this frozen state you're robbed of a future that always yeah always arrives too late" speaks of a sense of regret for wasting time and not living up to one's potential.
