Submarines
DJ Fresh Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We suggest you fly away
Do you ever wonder what it means
Choosing midnight over day?
In DJ Fresh's song Submarines, the lyrics "You fade to gray like submarines, we suggest you fly away" suggest that someone is withdrawing or becoming less present, like a submarine going underwater and fading from view. The use of gray reflects the moodiness and bleakness of the situation, while the suggestion to "fly away" implies escaping or running away from something. The next two lines, "Do you ever wonder what it means, choosing midnight over day?" questions why someone would choose to be in darkness (midnight) rather than basking in the light (day). This could be interpreted as a metaphor for depression or anxiety, where one feels more comfortable in the darkness and with isolation rather than in the light and surrounded by people.
The chorus of the song repeats the line "Which way is up?" multiple times, which can be a reference to feeling lost or disoriented, as if one is floating underwater. The lyrics and overall vibe of the song can be seen as a call to action to work through struggles and not get lost in the darkness. Overall, the lyrics of Submarines provide a raw and emotional exploration of feelings of isolation and depression.
