Fast Car
DJ Sharon O Love & 3 Elements Lyrics

Chorus
You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere (x2)

You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Anyplace is better
Starting from zero got nothing to lose
Maybe we'll make something
Me myself I got nothing to prove

But is it fast enough so we can fly away? (x2)

You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Anyplace is better
Starting from zero got nothing to lose
Maybe we'll make something
Me myself I got nothing to prove

You got a fast car
But is it fast enough so we can fly away
We gotta make a decision
We leave tonight or live and die this way

So remember we we're driving driving in your car
The speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
And I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

Maybe together we could ride away

You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere

You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together fly away

Maybe together fly away(x2)

Overall Meaning

The song "Fast Car" is about the desire to create a better life through escaping from one's current circumstances. The singer admires their partner's fast car, seeing it as a means to leave behind their struggles and start fresh. The repeated line "Maybe together we can get somewhere" expresses their hope for a brighter future through joining forces rather than struggling alone.

The chorus reinforces this message, suggesting that anyplace is better than where they currently are and asking if the car is fast enough to help them fly away from their troubles. The decision to leave or stay is presented as a pivotal moment, where they must decide whether to take a risk or accept their current situation.

The bridge describes a moment of connection between the singer and their partner, as they drive through the city and share a sense of belonging and potential. The ultimate goal is to ride away together and start anew.

Overall, "Fast Car" is a poignant portrayal of the yearning for something better, and the possibilities that can arise from taking a chance.

The Tracey Chapman version of this song is an absolute classic, but I like this remix too. It was everywhere for about a week, then it just disappeared. It's a shame- it should have been a huge hit.
