Jekyll and Hyde
D & V Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's just so much goddamned weight on my shoulders
All I'm trying to do is live my motherfucking life
Supposed to be happy, but I'm only getting colder
Wear a smile on my face, but there's a demon inside
There's just so much goddamned weight on my shoulders
All I'm trying to do is live my motherfucking life
Supposed to be happy, but I'm only getting colder
Wear a smile on my face, but there's a demon inside

Oh, yo, yo, there's a demon inside
Oh, yo, yo, just like Jekyll and Hyde
Oh, yo, yo, all this anger inside
Oh, yo, yo, I feel like Jekyll and Hyde

There's just so much goddamned weight on your shoulders
That you can't just live your motherfucking life
The story's getting old and my heart is getting colder
I just wanna be Jekyll, but I'm always fighting Hyde
You've got rocks in your head, I can hear them rolling 'round
You can say that you're above it, but you're always falling down
Is there a method to your madness, is it all about pride?
Everyone I know, they've got a demon inside

Oh, yo, yo, there's a demon inside
Oh, yo, yo, just like Jekyll and Hyde
Oh, yo, yo, all this anger inside
Oh, yo, yo, I feel like Jekyll and Hyde

If I wasn't so deranged, could I ever face the pain?
If I ever want to change, would this all remain the same?
Oh, yo, yo
All I'm trying to do is live my motherfucking life
Oh, yo, yo
Wear a smile on my face, but there's a demon inside
Oh, yo, yo
All I'm trying to do is live my motherfucking life
Oh, yo, yo
Wear a smile on my face, but there's a demon inside

Oh, yo, yo, there's a demon inside
Oh, yo, yo, just like Jekyll and Hyde

Oh, yo, yo, all this anger inside
Oh, yo, yo, I feel like Jekyll and Hyde

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to D & V's song Jekyll and Hyde describe the struggle of trying to maintain a happy exterior while battling inner demons. The singer is weighed down by their troubles and desperately trying to live their life despite feeling like they're getting colder inside. There's a demon inside of them, like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and this anger consumes them. It's a struggle to try and be Jekyll, "the good side," when Hyde, "the bad side," is always there fighting.

The singer points out that everyone they know has a demon inside too. The lyrics suggest that it's a common theme in human nature to have a darker side to themselves. The question then becomes, can someone face the pain and make a change, or will everything remain the same? The lyrics don't offer a clear answer, but the motif of Jekyll and Hyde suggests that this internal struggle is not new, and it may be ongoing.

Overall, the lyrics capture the idea that even as we try to present a happy face to the world, it's challenging to overcome the demons inside. The metaphor of Jekyll and Hyde effectively portrays the constant struggle between one's better angels and darker impulses.

I suggest the story of Dr J & Mr H is a heavily embroidered tale of heroin addiction.

@J K id disagree considering withdrawal, but tbh everyone has different reactions to addiction so if you take that out of account then for some people it very well could be

Okay. Just so we’re all clear, this story is not about two separate personalities fighting for supremacy to control one body, but rather it’s about a man who wanted to live on the edge without tarnishing his respectable reputation. Needless to say, the drugged he concocted worked, but as time marched on the transformations began to happen on their own accord, which made it difficult for Dr. Henry Jekyll to maintain his secret life as the vile Edward Hyde. In the end, with his back against the wall and no way out of his predicament, Jekyll took his own life by consuming poison to avoid the consequences of all his actions as Jekyll and Hyde.
