Face to Face
Daft Punk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What's going on? Could this be my understanding?
It's not your fault I was being too demanding
I must admit, it's my pride that made me distant
All because I hoped that you'd be someone different

There's not much I know about you
Fear will always make you blind
But the answer is in clear view
It's amazing what you'll find face to face

I turned away 'cause I thought you were the problem
Tried to forget, until I hit the bottom
But when I faced you in my blank confusion
I realized you weren't wrong, was a mere illusion

It really didn't make sense
Just to leave this unresolved
It's not hard to go the distance
When you finally get involved face to face

It really didn't make sense
Just to leave this unresolved

It's not hard to go the distance
When you finally get involved face to face

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Daft Punk's "Face to Face" convey a sense of realization and self-reflection. The singer acknowledges that they were too proud and demanding in their previous interactions with the person they are addressing. They recognize that they had an image in their mind of who this person should be, and that their own expectations blinded them to the reality of who the other person actually was. However, upon facing the person they had turned away from, the singer realizes that their perception was merely an illusion. The answer had been in clear view all along, and it was only by coming face to face with the truth that they were able to see it.

The song can be interpreted more generally as a message about the importance of communication and honesty in relationships. It is easy to avoid confrontations, to let conflicts go unresolved, to turn away from others when things get difficult. But in order to truly understand and connect with others, it is necessary to confront those difficulties and engage directly with the people we care about.

@rezasarandongard7805

It's French as far as I can tell, which seems likely given that Daft Punk are themselves French.

Tu rentres, qu'est tu fais là, qu'est tu fais
Tu rentres, qu'est tu fais là, (mais me )

You come in, what are you doing here, what are you doing there?
You come home, what are you doing here, (but me)

I'm unsure with the mais me/but me bit at the end. It might be mais mie (but my wife).

This song must of been insane to make, it's probably the most complex song Daft Punk song made. It has 15 songs (that we know of) sampled in it, and even over 20 years later, people are still finding different samples in this one song. It is produced by Todd Edwards, who is known for using samples like this, but even for him, this had to be an achievement.

For those curious, the 15 songs we know for sure are in this are:
1. Evil Woman by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO)
2. Can't Get It Out of My Head by ELO
3. Old and Wise by Alan Parsons Project (APP)
4. Silence and I by APP
5. House at Pooh Corner by Loggins and Messina (L/M)
6. Be Free by L/M
7. Twins Theme by Dan Fogelberg and Tim Weisberg (F/W)
8. Tell Me to My Face by F/W
9.Lahaina Luna by F/W
10. You Got Some Imagination by Boz Scaggs
11. All Along the Watchtower by Dave Mason
12. Sometimes a Love Goes Wrong by Carrie Lucas
13. Everybody's Next One by Steppenwolf
14. Body and Soul by Firefall
15. South City Midnight Lady by The Doobie Brothers.
Edit: There was another one found.
16. Faith in the Families by Poco
2nd Edit: Recently, Todd Edwards streamed that he found the original disk that had the 'face to face' samples on it. from this, 3 more samples were found.
17. Jisco Dazz by Herbie Mann
18. It Keeps You Running by The Doobie Brothers
19. The Letter by Deborah Washington
Final Edit: the final track was found.
20. Nothing Like Love by Rockie Robbins
