Titanic
Dalla - De Gregori Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sior Capitano mi stia a sentire
Ho belle e pronte le mille lire
In prima classe voglio viaggiare

E gira gira, gira gira l'elica

Trasmetteva saluti e speranze
Per questa crociera straordinaria
E riceveva messaggi d'auguri

Overall Meaning

The song Titanic by De Gregori tells the story of a group of passengers aboard the ill-fated RMS Titanic in first, second, and third class. The opening lines detail the price differences between classes, with first class being the most expensive, and third class being the most uncomfortable. However, the singer, who speaks to the captain, is willing to pay the high price for first-class tickets to accompany his fifteen-year-old daughter in hopes of being invited to dine with the upper-class passengers. He also fantasizes about toasting to the voyage with new American rhythms and the clinking of glasses.

The second verse introduces a third-class passenger who reveals that the accommodations are much better than expected, and they are being treated with more respect than usual. The passengers are enamored by the black oil-like sea and the shining moon, finding solace in the sound of the ship’s horn as it reverberates through the hull. The song ends with the perspective of a first-class female passenger who is more interested in the attention her hat is getting than her surroundings. She fawns over a man with icy eyes, wondering if she should muster up the courage to kiss him before they dock in America.

The song speaks to the class divide of the time and how it played a significant role in this tragedy. The glamorous appeal of the ship and the promise of a better life in America attracted passengers of all classes, but the ship's limited number of lifeboats ultimately led to its downfall. The song also touches on the human need to find hope and joy in difficult situations, even in the face of impending danger.
