Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song “The Mission” by Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley feat. Stephen Marley express the message of unity, struggle and perseverance. The song begins with various places in Jamaica, from where the youths come out with plans and ambition to face the Armageddon. They are encouraged to follow the tradition of their ancestors and their African roots by reading the teachings of Marcus Garvey and Haile Selassie, who believed in the equality and unity of all people regardless of their race, colour or religion. The lyrics also depict the current social issues in Jamaica, such as segregation, violence and poverty, and encourage the youth to work towards the betterment of their society, to seek knowledge, and to stay true to their beliefs.

The song inspires and empowers the youths, especially those who are struggling with the guerilla warfare or fighting for their rights in different parts of the world, from Somalia to Ethiopia, Egypt to Zimbabwe, and Iraq to USA. It reminds them that their struggle is not in vain, and their efforts will pay off one day. The song concludes by calling upon people from all over Jamaica, from Portmore to Kingston, to come together and proclaim their mission.

@jarrodjack33

Rap artists should focus on producing songs that will inspire and educate listeners instead of rapping about how much money, how many girls, and how many people they killed. By doing so, it only creates more youth especially black youth to lead a life of chaos, violence, and the rejection of education. This song acknowledges that all humans are equal regardless of race, country or religion. Good message, very important.
