Damian was two years old when his father Bob died; he is the only child born to Marley and Cindy Breakspeare, Miss World 1976. Damian's nickname Junior Gong is derived from his father's nickname of Tuff Gong. Damian has been performing since the age of 13 and released his first album in 1996, at the age of 18. He shares, along with most of his family, a full-time career in music. Unlike his brothers and sisters, however, his musical specialty is "toasting", a Jamaican vocal technique that is a predecessor to rapping.
Damian has 3 records to date, including the highest placed reggae album in the USA billboard album charts with Welcome To Jamrock, and the highest place reggae song in the UK Top 40 with Welcome to Jamrock.
Like his father before him and the rest of the Marley family, he is a Rastafarian and his music reflects the Rastafari guiding principles of love and political freedom.

In Damian Marley's song R.O.A.R., he talks about a community where people stand up for their rights and defend their neighborhoods, ensuring that everyone lives in peace and harmony. The lyrics describe a place where the citizens are responsible, respectful of each other, and take pride in their collective security. The song imagines a society that is devoid of crime, and everyone is free to go about their daily lives without fear of harm. Every member of this community is held responsible for upholding the rules and regulations, and they take it upon themselves to ensure that law and order prevail.
Marley makes it clear in the song that they deal harshly with anyone that tries to disrupt the peace. They take quick action against anyone, no matter their status or background, that commits an offense. The lyrics emphasize that everyone must take responsibility for protecting their community, from the old to the young, and they must be willing to fight to preserve their way of life. Overall, the song is a call for everyone to take ownership of their environment, with each member playing their unique part and taking pride in ensuring that their home remains a peaceful and secure place.
