Jurado's solo career began during the mid-1990s, releasing lo-fi folk based recordings on his own cassette-only label, Casa Recordings, beginning in 1995.
Jurado often makes use of found-sound and field-recording techniques, and has experimented with different forms of tape recordings. In 2000 he released Postcards and Audio Letters, a collection of found audio letters and fragments that he had found from sources such as thrift store tape players and answering machines. Also released in 2000 was Ghost of David,, Jurado's bleakest and most personal sounding record to date. I Break Chairs, (2002) was produced by long time friend, David Bazan. It was his last album for Sub Pop, and was a much rockier, electric affair. After signing for the Indiana-based label Secretly Canadian, Damien Jurado reverted to his trademark folk ballad-based style, releasing six more albums: Where Shall You Take Me? (2003), On My Way To Absence (2005), And Now That I'm In Your Shadow (2006), Caught in the Trees (2008), Saint Bartlett (2010) and Maraqopa (2012).

Angel of May
Damien Jurado Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Always trying to work it out
But a girl you love behind still hangs around
She's always wondering when you'll come back
The fact is you (are not)
You will never at all
The fact is (are not)
It's getting hard to pay attention now
But a girl you love behind still comes around
She's always asking, "When will he return?"
I can give her no answer
The fact is you (are not)
You will never at all
The fact is (are not)
You will never at all
The above lyrics are from Damien Jurado’s song Angel of May, and they convey a sense of confusion, frustration, and perhaps even resignation. The singer of the song is struggling to give his full attention to someone he cares about, but he is distracted by the memory of another woman who he loved and who is still present in his mind. This other woman is a source of tension and uncertainty, as she keeps hanging around and wondering when he will come back to her. The singer seems to be torn between his past and his present, unable to fully commit to either one.
The repetition of the phrase “The fact is you (are not) / You will never at all / The fact is (are not) / You will never at all” at the end of each verse adds a sense of finality and emphasis to the song. It suggests that the singer has already made up his mind and accepted that he will never be able to fully return to the woman he once loved, and that this fact is weighing heavily on him and affecting his ability to be present in the moment. The song is a poignant portrayal of the complexities of human emotions and the lingering effects of past relationships.

I remember way back, my neighbor awaking me with this song playing loudly about 3 am. When I knocked on his door he thought I was there to complain. I was not.
