Jurado's solo career began during the mid-1990s, releasing lo-fi folk based recordings on his own cassette-only label, Casa Recordings, beginning in 1995.
Jurado often makes use of found-sound and field-recording techniques, and has experimented with different forms of tape recordings. In 2000 he released Postcards and Audio Letters, a collection of found audio letters and fragments that he had found from sources such as thrift store tape players and answering machines. Also released in 2000 was Ghost of David,, Jurado's bleakest and most personal sounding record to date. I Break Chairs, (2002) was produced by long time friend, David Bazan. It was his last album for Sub Pop, and was a much rockier, electric affair. After signing for the Indiana-based label Secretly Canadian, Damien Jurado reverted to his trademark folk ballad-based style, releasing six more albums: Where Shall You Take Me? (2003), On My Way To Absence (2005), And Now That I'm In Your Shadow (2006), Caught in the Trees (2008), Saint Bartlett (2010) and Maraqopa (2012).

Damien Jurado Lyrics

Face the wrong direction, turn around to see
You'll see it's me and I don't wanna play these games
Do you know I know? You know it's not the same
I don't need you anymore
I'm independent, there's nothing to say
I don't need you anymore now
Can I ask a question? Were we meant to be?
Face the wrong direction, don't say you don't need me
I know you do, you do when you call to me
I know you do, you do when you call to me
I don't need you anymore
I'm independent, there's nothing to say
I don't need you anymore now
I'm independent, there's nothing to say
I'm independent, there's nothing to say
I'm independent, there's nothing to say
I'm independent, don't you walk away
I'm independent, don't you walk away
In Damien Jurado's song "Independent," the singer questions whether he and his lover were meant to be together. He feels like they are facing the wrong direction and need to turn around, but he's not sure if they will find each other. He no longer wants to play games and realizes that things have changed between them - things that his lover may not even be aware of. Despite this, the singer insists that he doesn't need his partner anymore and claims his independence. He wants to make it clear that he won't allow his lover to just walk away.
The song is bittersweet, expressing both the desire to be independent and the loneliness that comes with it. The singer recognizes that he no longer needs his partner, but he also seems to struggle with the idea of being alone. The chorus repeats the phrase "I'm independent, there's nothing to say," suggesting that the singer is trying to convince himself of his independence. However, the repetition of this line also highlights the singer's uncertainty and the fear of losing his partner.
Overall, "Independent" is a song about the uncertainty and loneliness that can come with making the decision to be independent. It explores the internal struggle between wanting to be free and wanting to hold onto a relationship.
