Jurado's solo career began during the mid-1990s, releasing lo-fi folk based recordings on his own cassette-only label, Casa Recordings, beginning in 1995.
Jurado often makes use of found-sound and field-recording techniques, and has experimented with different forms of tape recordings. In 2000 he released Postcards and Audio Letters, a collection of found audio letters and fragments that he had found from sources such as thrift store tape players and answering machines. Also released in 2000 was Ghost of David,, Jurado's bleakest and most personal sounding record to date. I Break Chairs, (2002) was produced by long time friend, David Bazan. It was his last album for Sub Pop, and was a much rockier, electric affair. After signing for the Indiana-based label Secretly Canadian, Damien Jurado reverted to his trademark folk ballad-based style, releasing six more albums: Where Shall You Take Me? (2003), On My Way To Absence (2005), And Now That I'm In Your Shadow (2006), Caught in the Trees (2008), Saint Bartlett (2010) and Maraqopa (2012).

Silver Joy
Damien Jurado Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
in the slumber of the morning.
There's nowhere I need to be
and my dreams still are calling
Lay your troubles on the ground;
no need to worry about them now.
Daylight shaking through the trees,
And if you need a place to land
come down when you are weary.
No more clouds to put away
in the slumber of the morning
Keep me with you on the ground
all of my worries behind me now.
Daylight shaking through the trees,
do not disturb me let me be
Let me sleep
in the slumber of tomorrow.
There's nowhere we need to be
that will not be there after.
Keep me with you on the ground
all of my worries behind me now.
And be sure to wake me when
eternity begins.
In "Silver Joy," Damien Jurado invites the listener to join him in a state of restful tranquility, to indulge in the pleasure of a lazy morning, and to let go of the worries and preoccupations of daily life. The opening lines of the song are an invitation to sleep, to sink into the deep, comfortable slumber of the hours just before dawn. There is no particular destination or schedule to keep, only the call of dreams and the luxurious feeling of being absent from the world for a little while. The repetition of the refrain, "let me be," emphasizes the desire for solitude, for being left alone with one's own thoughts and feelings.
The second verse signals a shift in the song's tone, from a solitary experience to a shared one. The listener is invited to join Jurado on the ground, to leave behind their own worries and to find comfort in each other's company. The description of the daylight shaking through the trees is a vivid image, one that suggests the passage of time and the inevitability of change. Yet, the desire to be left undisturbed remains as strong as ever, reinforcing the idea that this moment of rest is all too fleeting, and must be cherished while it lasts.
The final stanza brings the song to a close, with Jurado again returning to the theme of eternity. There is a sense of finality in the words "when eternity begins," as though the singer is prepared to relinquish the pleasures of the present moment and face the unknown future. The message of the song is clear: life is unpredictable and chaotic, but there is always a place of refuge to be found in the peacefulness of the here and now.

Let me sleep
Allow me to rest
in the slumber of the morning.
In a state of peaceful sleep during early hours
There's nowhere I need to be
I have no obligations
and my dreams still are calling
My unconscious mind still has unfinished business
Lay your troubles on the ground;
Set aside your problems
no need to worry about them now.
They can wait for later
Daylight shaking through the trees,
The sun is filtering through branches
do not disturb me let me be
Please don't interrupt my peace
And if you need a place to land
If you need somewhere to rest
come down when you are weary.
Visit when you're exhausted
No more clouds to put away
No more problems to solve
in the slumber of the morning
During peaceful sleep of early hours
Keep me with you on the ground
Keep me grounded
all of my worries behind me now.
I'm leaving my problems behind
Let me sleep
Let me rest
in the slumber of tomorrow.
In peaceful sleep in the future
There's nowhere we need to be
We don't have anywhere to go
that will not be there after.
We can go there at a later time
And be sure to wake me when
Please awaken me after
eternity begins.
Life goes on forever
