Jurado's solo career began during the mid-1990s, releasing lo-fi folk based recordings on his own cassette-only label, Casa Recordings, beginning in 1995.
Jurado often makes use of found-sound and field-recording techniques, and has experimented with different forms of tape recordings. In 2000 he released Postcards and Audio Letters, a collection of found audio letters and fragments that he had found from sources such as thrift store tape players and answering machines. Also released in 2000 was Ghost of David,, Jurado's bleakest and most personal sounding record to date. I Break Chairs, (2002) was produced by long time friend, David Bazan. It was his last album for Sub Pop, and was a much rockier, electric affair. After signing for the Indiana-based label Secretly Canadian, Damien Jurado reverted to his trademark folk ballad-based style, releasing six more albums: Where Shall You Take Me? (2003), On My Way To Absence (2005), And Now That I'm In Your Shadow (2006), Caught in the Trees (2008), Saint Bartlett (2010) and Maraqopa (2012).

Wedding Cake
Damien Jurado Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
"He's someone I'll regret."
He's out there setting fires to
The demons in his head
Once you called it perfect love
You now call it accident
Do you sit with your photo books
It was clearly never meant to be
You told all your friends,
"He's someone I'll forget."
How do you erase a ghost
Who sleeps inside your bed
Throw away your wedding rings
Give away the gown
Say goodbye to the accident
Who only brought you down
It was clearly never meant to be
You told all your friends,
"He's someone I'll regret."
He's out there setting fires to
The demons in his head
Once you called it perfect love
You now call it accident
Do you sit with your photo books
Wondering where he went
It was clearly never meant to be
The song "Wedding Cake" by Damien Jurado tells the story of a failed relationship that was once seen as "perfect love" but ended up being an "accident" that brought the singer down. The song reflects on the aftermath of the breakup where the two partners who were once in love are now struggling to live without each other. Throughout the song, we can see the singer's emotions shifting from regret to acceptance as they come to understand that the relationship was never meant to be.
In the first verse, the singer reflects on how their partner labeled them as a regret, making it clear that they no longer wanted to be with them. The partner is described as being out there setting fires to the demons in his head, hinting that he is struggling with mental health issues that caused the breakup. In the second verse, the singer wonders if their partner also regrets the relationship and if they are struggling with moving on by looking at old photo books.
The chorus emphasizes that the relationship was never meant to be, and the partner was never right for the singer. The repetitive nature of the chorus emphasizes the idea that the relationship was doomed from the start, and both partners should move on.
Overall, "Wedding Cake" is a poignant reflection of how a failed relationship can impact one's life. Damian Jurado tells a moving story of heartbreak and growth, signifying that the end of the relationship was the start of a new chapter in the singer's life.
