the way
Damien Rice Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Long long way to the top
Long way down if you fall
And it's a long way back if you get lost

Long way out to the end
Long way to go to lose your friends
It's a long way to haul all the traps you've trawled
When you could just stop and let go

You say "not now, maybe later
But not now, maybe later
Not now, maybe later" (you're only in your way)
"But not now, maybe later" (you're only in your way)
"Not now, maybe later" (you're only in your way)
"But not now, maybe later" (you're only in your way)
"But not now, maybe wait" (you're only in your way)

'Cause love is tough
When enough is not enough
Not enough
Not enough
Not enough
Not enough

Not enough
(Not enough)

Overall Meaning

The song "Long Long Way" by Damien Rice is a commentary on life's journeys and the struggles that come with them. The opening lines, "Long long way to the top, long way down if you fall, and it's a long way back if you get lost," speaks to the journey of achieving one's goals, and the challenges that come with it. The path to success can be long and arduous, and the consequences of failure can be severe, making it challenging to pick oneself back up and try again.

The second verse of the song delves into the idea of losing one's way and alienating oneself from their friends. Rice sings, "Long way out to the end, long way to go to lose your friends." This line speaks to the idea that going down a path of self-destruction or self-isolation can lead to losing valuable connections with people one loves. The final verse of the song echoes this idea, with the lines "Love is tough when enough is not enough." These lines convey the struggles that come with maintaining healthy relationships and the challenges of knowing when it's time to walk away.

Overall, Long Long Way is a mournful ode to the challenges that come with life's journeys, reminding listeners that the path to success can be long and difficult, but it's essential to hold onto the relationships that mean the most.

Line by Line Meaning

Reaching your dreams and the ultimate goal is a journey that's far and difficult.

Long way down if you fall
If you fail while aiming for greatness, the fall will be arduous and protracted.

And it's a long way back if you get lost
Losing sight of who you are or where you are heading can take a long-span travel time to find your way.

Long way out to the end
The conclusion of a pursuit is a substantial distance that needs to be traveled.

Long way to go to lose your friends
Friends are important, and they are missed, but it takes many paths and time to get to a point where a loss inevitably happens.

It's a long way to haul all the traps you've trawled
The baggage we collect is challenging to carry, and it takes substantial effort to deal with the pain they bring.

When you could just stop and let go
However, it is quite possible to simplify life and let go of the burden, but it takes courage to do so.

You say "not now, maybe later
Procrastination weaved in the self-talk can be a major obstruction.

But not now, maybe later

"Not now, maybe later" (you're only in your way)
But at moments, we become our obstacle, and we deny ourselves the chance of growth.

"But not now, maybe later" (you're only in your way)
We find reasons, just like the above line, to convince ourselves that now may not be the time.

"Not now, maybe later" (you're only in your way)
We can see further than where we are, and that what we wish and desire is feasible, even though, it's only in the way we think of the sacrifices needed that stops us.

"But not now, maybe later" (you're only in your way)
Thus, likely, it is merely our way of thinking, and the moment we understand how much we are blocking ourselves, we comprehend that delays are detrimental.

"But not now, maybe wait" (you're only in your way)
Nonetheless, sometimes, waiting is good when we are uncertain, and we can always return later.

'Cause love is tough
Love is not always an effortless journey, and turmoil is to be expected.

When enough is not enough
Love requires an all-in commitment to accept its highs and lows entirely.

Not enough
However, when either of the partners is not willing to commit and make things work despite their best efforts, it could fall apart.

Not enough
Then, it becomes more apparent when the relationship is over.

Not enough
But even when such things happen, it is okay to admit that it wasn't enough and move on with growth someday.

Not enough
Sometimes, allowing closure and leaving a relationship could allow growth and productivity.

Not enough
And regardless of the circumstances that bring about one's departure from the relationships, admitting that it is not enough is acceptable.

Not enough
In summary, by being honest with ourselves, we put in the effort required for the transition that leads to growth.

And so it is just like you said it would be
Life goes easy on me
Most of the time
And so it is the shorter story
No love, no glory
No hero in her sky

I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes

And so it is just like you said it should be
We'll both forget the breeze
Most of the time
And so it is the colder water
The Blower's daughter
The pupil in denial

I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes

Did I say that I loathe you?
Did I say that I want to leave it all behind?

I can't take my mind off you
I can't take my mind off you
I can't take my mind off you
I can't take my mind off you
I can't take my mind off you
I can't take my mind
My mind, my mind
'Til I find somebody new

@fallenclouds3281

you're right and I guess damien rice knows that NOW too. but like I said - he was 27 and she was 20.

yes almost seven years together but as I said they were very young. and ppl change a lot at that age.

Especially a lot of young men don't appreciate such love or a really good relationship till it is too late. Quite a few of my friends had the same problem (at that age) and they all tried to get their love back. no one with success.....

(young) women fight for their relationships till they (have to) give up and come to an end. a lot of (young) men start to fight when their love is gone. then they realize what they have lost - but most of the time too late...

sry, my english isn't that good. cheers ;)

This song is like a time machine. I remember being at the cinema in London with my friend at the premiere of the film. It was the happiest period of my life. We were young and happy. Now after 20 years she still lives in London, I live in Poland all the time but when I come back to this song, I close my eyes and we are together again in this cinema...This wonderful girl is now a beautiful, wonderful woman. I will always remember her.I can't take my mind off her...

We attach music we hear to events in our lives when we hear the music. When we hear the music again we remember the events at the original listening. It could have been Baby Shark 😂
