Two Lost Souls
Damn Yankees [Original Broadway Cast] Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[JOE & LOLA]
Two lost souls on the highway of life
We ain't even got a sister or brother
Ain't it just great, ain't it just grand?
We've got each other!

Two lost ships on a stormy sea
One with no sails and one with no rudder
Ain't it just great, ain't it just grand?
We've got each udder!

Two lost sheep, in the wilds of the hills
Far from the other Jacks and Jills, we wandered away and went astray
But we ain't fussin'
Cuz we've got "us'n"

We're two lost souls on the highway of life
And there's no one with whom we would ruther
Say, "Ain't it just great, ain't it just grand?"
We've got each other!

Wherever we go, whatever we do
As long as you've got me, and I've got you
We've got a lot because we've got each other!
We've got each other

We ain't fussin'- cuz we got "us'n."

Overall Meaning

The song "Two Lost Souls" from the musical Damn Yankees is a duet between two main characters, Joe and Lola. The lyrics depict their realization that they have no one else in their lives but each other, but they are happy and content with just that. The two lost souls are on their journey through life without the support or companionship of a sibling or a friend. The song tells the story of how they found happiness and comfort in each other's company and how they will face any challenges together.

The lyrics contain several metaphors to describe the state of their lonely lives, such as lost souls on the highway of life, lost ships on a stormy sea, and lost sheep in the wilds of the hills. The use of these analogies enhances the melancholic but hopeful mood of the song. Also, the wordplays, such as "each udder" instead of "each other" and "fussin'" instead of "fussing," add a humorous touch to the otherwise sad undertone of the lyrics.

Overall, the song portrays the value and importance of having someone to rely on in life, even if it's just one person. The song's upbeat tempo and catchy tune add to its charm, making it a fan favorite.

Gwen's movements, like the spins she does at 4:02 were so precise and tight, when comparing them to the other dancers who were just technical and getting the job done. All her movements followed the music to a T. And all done so effortlessly and at times with sleight of hand. Just perfection.

Did you bother to ready the note I included with the clip?

Next to goodbye old girl, you got to have heart, and those were the good old days this is my favorite song from the entire musical.

Bob Fosse’s choreography, Gwen Vernon’s moves and gorgeous Tab Hunter. What else could you possibly ask for? Ok, maybe Marlene Dietrich in Christian Dior on a Alfred Hitchcock picture signing Cole Porter (Stage Fright).

IT’S BACK ON! Even though Gwen’s solo has been edited out, I’m just glad that this video is back online for all to enjoy Fosse’s brilliant choreography and Gwen’s fluid dancing. Compare this to the recreation by Jane Krakowski and you’ll see why Gwen Verdon is considered the best dancer.
