White Rabbit
Damned The Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall
And you know you're going to fall
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call
Call Alice
When she was just small
When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving slow
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know
When logic and proportion have fallen [unverified] dead
And the white knight is talking backwards
And the red queen's lost her head
Remember what the dormouse said
Feed your head, feed your head
One pill makes you nervous
And one pill makes you fall
And the ones that you've been taking
Won't do you any good at all
Go ask Alice
She just hit the floor
Now you said, you could take it
Yeah, you'd said anything
But when your habit does all the talking
Yeah, you'd say anything
You could ask Alice
But I think she's gone
Now you've just lost all your money
And you've been thrown out of your home
But for that one more gram of cocaine
You'd sell your very soul
Go ask Alice
Well, now she knows
She's living in a dreamworld
And [unverified]
But you'd better pull yourself together
'Cause this is reality
But I think that you'd might be
Better off dead, use your head
Use your head, use your head
"White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane is a song that reflects the psychedelic era of the 60s. It features lyrics about drug use and the altered states of consciousness it brings. The opening lines, "One pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small, and the ones that mother gives you don't do anything at all," refer to the variety of drugs available at that time, which could create a range of different effects. The reference to "mother" highlights the idea that society's rules and regulations have no effect on drug use.
The song also references the Lewis Carroll novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The lyric "Go ask Alice, when she's ten feet tall" and "Well, logic and proportion have fallen sloppy dead, and the White Knight is talking backwards, and the Red Queen's off with her head," reference specific scenes from the novel. The hookah-smoking caterpillar is another character from the book that's mentioned in the song.
Later in the song, the lyrics suggest that drug use can lead to addiction and ruin: "Now you've just lost all your money, and you've been thrown out of your home, But for that one more gram of cocaine, you'd sell your very soul." The song's final lines are a warning to listeners about the dangers of drug use, suggesting that it can lead to a distorted sense of reality and ultimately, self-destruction.

Love it. Authentic tribute to the original that was out 19 years before this one by keeping its psychedelic aura.

Whoever did this video is really brilliant I think. Kudos to whoever you are. I have seen the Damned about 8 times I think and own everything they put out (vinyl, CD, video) and this video is excellent. They should hire you for their next video. By the way, if you ever are doing a video for a country western act, you might want to contact me, as my brother is president of CMH Records. Anyway, cheers to you from a disciple of the Damned and brother of a counry western disciple...
