Control
Dan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A sense of relief for a rover like me
And a dive into my fears but I fear I'm not that deep
There's a pool of old thoughts I'm wishing to evaporate
But it's in our nature to want what we cannot attain
A senseless release, my mind is no longer free
And the world melts away leaving shadows where you all would be
Picking me apart with your sullen eyes
When will you realize? I can do that by myself
Perhaps it's time to accept how it's always going to be
The harder you fight to escape, the more it consumes you
If giving in feels so good, why consider anything else?
You feel you have nothing to show for everything you've done
To live is to face failure
We control you
A senseful reprieve as I look to see
Who's still around me and why you won't leave

I've tried for so long and seen it all come undone
When's the last time you'll pardon your prodigal son?

Overall Meaning

The song "Control" by DAN is a sensual and steamy ode to the power of romantic attraction. The opening lines find the singer searching for the right words to describe the intensity of his feelings towards his love interest. He acknowledges that if others could see what he sees in her, they would understand her worth. The chorus then declares that being with her makes him lose control, with her breath around his lungs and her legs around his thoughts.

The second verse continues in this vein, with the singer struggling to keep up with the intensity of his love. He distinguishes between what he should be doing and what he actually is doing, indicating that his emotions are taking over. The chorus repeats the same refrain, emphasizing the idea that being with this person is overwhelming.

"Real hip hop is about the feeling and the subject" - Of course it is. But it's also music. A guitarist might have the idea for the greatest riff in the world, but if his technique with the guitar is terrible, any beauty in it gets wasted because it can't be expressed in a way that's interesting, impressive and dramatic enough. The same goes for rapping with a flow. You lose the flow, you're doing spoken word. Even traditional poetry has its own kind of flow, and often, it follows certain rules and ideas for how its presented. If you have great ideas but can't rap them, you should be an orator, not a rapper. The issue with Bull's flow is that he is pretty good at putting together words that rhyme or alliterate, but he's terrible at keeping his flow interesting. It's static, his voice is monotone and droning, it never changes pitch, it never has a good rhythm to it. Flow is the cornerstone of rap; feeling and/or message are what validates it.

"The subject of this is that most chart rappers focus too much on flow and feeling" - Sure, you can find popular rappers that aren't very good at making good points. But honestly, at this point, this has become an ascended meme. It's easy saying "oh look at all these rappers all they talk about is guns, bitches and bling", but when confronted, asked to name some, most people either go silent or give an objectively wrong answer. This point is fairly stupid anyway. Just because you fancy yourself smart and think that providing a pre-chewed pop science lecture in every song is a great idea, doesn't mean you're in a position to mock anyone who doesn't do the same. Most rappers don't do that unless they can make a point that is a bit more advanced than baby's first naive opinion, and Bull should try to join those ranks. Also, it's stupid to make a dumbass diss track, then spend the last handful of lines completely backtracking. "Oh, all that stuff I did just now? Yeah you shouldn't do that", great sense of moral superiority, buddy. There's a reason "an eye for an eye" is considered outdated. And while we're addressing this point, as said, I'm doubtful that Bull has ever really given Jay-Z, Juicy J or Ortiz a listen. What, are you going to label them, too, as "guns bitches bling" because the only thing you ever heard from them was Control? Because I doubt anyone who had tried to listen to them would say they don't deserve their fame. Who is Bull to think he can show Jay-Z or Ortiz how to rap? Do you think Juicy J is defined by the mainstream music he made after almost two decades of being an underground legend for his lyrics?

"Dan is quite a touching fellow" - How? All he offers is gaming themes, "wow I'm better than you" (one video is even titled "autistic guy raps better than you" - wow, great job with the acceptance there), or pre-chewed, simple ideas like "we should all hug" or "wow science is a nice thing and civilization is evil at times". Simple ideas can be made profound with presentation and feeling. But when you leave simple ideas alone, and focus your songs around them like they were a grand revelation, all you get is low-hanging fruit. What you attract is the so-called intelligentsia of the internet, the kind of people who liked I Fucking Love Science and think bitcoin will revolutionize the economy. Congrats, you just listened to Dan Bull rap about how Jay-Z shouldn't talk bad about people, and did it by talking bad about Jay-Z. Do you feel smarter now? You wanna be smart, don't think a three-minute rap more focused on sounding like a Dyson with a bit of paper in the funnel than being educational will get you anywhere closer to it. You wanna be smarter, educate yourself and don't listen to all this pop science crap that only makes you feel rewarded for listening to the cool guy say being smart is good.

"Dan uses all these techniques mentioned with great skill" - Really now? Gee willikers, waiting a minute to hear him say "all these pussies still have their hymen attached" really made me rack my brain until I understood the genius of this line. No, great skill is the kind of lyricism that you don't realize until the fifth listen, the tenth, or years later as you're browsing Rapgenius. This isn't deep or brilliant or even skillful. This is just the simplest double entendre ever. Real skill is painting pictures with your words, instead of punching words directly in the listener's ear. It's obscure references, complicated, extended metaphors, and iceberg theory. The only iceberg theory Dan Bull has mastered is considering making a song about how sad it was that the Titanic sank and letting you in on the secret that a bunch of people died, which was really sad.

PS. "The last time I saw an eye sore, I sawed my eyes in half" does use a poetic technique. It's alliterative, using "eyes" and "eye" with a following s sound, and playing with the similarity of "sore" and "sawed".

I think people are taking Dan to seriously in this rap.

I doubt he is actually trying to insult anyone. If he was, he wouldn't have the upbeat attitude in this video. He raps for fun, so even his most insulting verses don't have more than a couple bad words and he wouldn't just start dissing someone for no reason

mini golf

I love these diss raps...just so many Dan good rhymes!

Kokopelli

"They say the pen is mightier than the sword, but I say the way I hold the mic is mightier than yours" Great line.

Dan this was excellent. "It's indisputable that i'm thing king of New York, and that's despite the fact that I've never been to New York." Thank you!

EmiJay

Everyone taking this song so seriously and saying (x) rapper would fuck dan up in rap, then I am sitting here thinking "maybe he is just poking fun" nothing else but a bit of banterish rap about other rappers

Lando Zierenberg

this is why I love Dan Bull, one of the few rappers I enjoy listening to.

Jon

I can't explain how much I love this, or how valid the points he makes are. All I can say is, Dan Bull, I love you.

Dwatthaell

Haha! Love it, Dan! Rap that says something meaningful and says it well.. you put these "big names" to shame.

Cazron
