Auerbach grew up in a family with musical roots. His second cousin once removed was the late guitarist Robert Quine, an American guitarist known for his innovative guitar solos. Auerbach became infatuated with blues music during his childhood after being exposed to old records by his father. Auerbach often uses an index finger fingerpick along with his thumb to play chords, a technique similar to many earlier blues players.
Formerly of the three piece Akron band The Barnburners from 2000 until 2002, Auerbach formed The Black Keys with drummer Patrick Carney.
Auerbach released a solo album - Keep It Hid - in 2009. Auerbach played most of the instruments on the album, with his cousin James Quine contributing rhythm guitar on two songs and harmony vocals on two more.
Heartbroken In Disrepair

All my belongings, I hold in one arm
Under the bridge, asleep in the shade
All of the terrible choices that I made
Searching for light, gasping for air
Heartbroken, in disrepair
Cause I gotta live with myself, till I?m dust
Just walk on by, if we pass on the street
Sometimes in battle, it?s best to retreat
Searching for light, gasping for air
Heartbroken, in disrepair
The lyrics to Dan Auerbach's song Heartbroken In Disrepair describe a person who is struggling with the consequences of their poor choices. The first line, "There is no light, there is no charm" sets the tone of the song as one of darkness and despair. The singer is wandering through the streets with all their belongings held in one arm, indicating that they are homeless or have lost everything. They seek refuge under a bridge and reflect on the terrible choices they have made that have led them to this point.
The second verse reveals the singer's inner turmoil as they try to search for a way out of their situation. They feel heartbroken and helpless, unable to find any relief or comfort. They allude to seeking forgiveness from God, but acknowledge that this alone is not enough to absolve them of their actions. They must live with the consequences of their choices, even after they have passed away. The final lines of the song acknowledge that sometimes it's best to retreat from battle, indicating that the singer is still in the midst of a difficult situation.
Overall, the lyrics to Heartbroken In Disrepair tackle heavy themes of regret, guilt, and the consequences of poor decision-making. It's a song that speaks to the struggles many people face when they find themselves in difficult situations, but it also offers a glimmer of hope by revealing that even in the darkest of times, it's possible to find a way forward.

I love the Black Keys, but Dan by himself is pretty smokin' too. I love that he can make a song out of literally 2 maybe 3 chords and fill it with so much sound. He has the whole band in his guitar.

Coolest damn riff I've heard in years. Sounds almost like a lost surf song from an alternative dimensional plane being received and blending sonorously, falling on modern ears under an indie lens.
