Drifting
Dan Haseltine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a sea of lonely swimming sad
Looking just for an arm to grab
I don't need to understand
I'm just lending you the two that I have

[Chorus]
You might be drifting
And can't find the shore
So hopeless and all alone
The waves are crashing all around you
Just when you've lost the will to live
You see the sun

Can we make a searchlight
From all the bridges that we burn?
Do you see a rescue?
Or a deeper kind of hurt?

Who could love you,
Who could hold you?
I'd swim across the sea
You don't have to be alone
Where the shallow gets so deep

[Chorus]

I am hurt and nearly drown
(Open up your eyes)
I cry for help you turned around
(Open up your eyes)
Farther from the shore
Or you'll be farther from the shore

I am hurt and nearly drown
(You're not alone)
I cry for help you turned around
(I'm not letting go)
Farther from the shore
So you're not farther from the shore

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The first verse of the song speaks about a sea of lonely people swimming sadly, searching for someone or something to hold onto. The singer understands the situation and offers to help in any way possible. They do not need to understand the whole situation but can lend the two arms they have to hold the person who is struggling in the sea of loneliness. The chorus speaks about someone who is drifting in the sea and cannot find the shore, someone who feels hopeless and alone, constantly facing waves crashing all around them. And just when they lose the will to live, they glimpse the sun, which gives them hope. In the second verse, the singer asks an important and thought-provoking question. Can we make a searchlight from all the bridges that we burn? Are the broken relationships or ties we have in our lives, and the people we have hurt, the ones who can help us when we are drifting? The singer then reassures the person that there is someone in the world who could love them, hold them, and swim across the sea to be with them. They urge them not to be alone, to reach out and grab someone's hand when the water gets too deep.

The repeated lines of ‘I am hurt and nearly drown, open up your eyes’ signifies how the singer themself was in a distraught place once and got past it. The second half of the verse talks about needing help, but the person they cried out for refused. But the singer is not going to leave the person alone - they will be there to help them and ensure that they feel like they are closer to the shore.

Overall, this song is about showing empathy when someone is going through a hard time. The singer is basically saying that they might not be able to understand exactly what the person is going through, but they are willing to help and be there for them. The song also speaks to the healing power of a genuine connection with someone that offers support and love.

This is a great song; I really like this song too. I have heard the radio version and can't get enough of it either; it's more upbeat but still speaks to me about the love of God and of the love we should have for one another. When we feel lost or all alone God is there, we just need to cry out to him. He will not let us down; I feel that Tiffany is singing about God's love expressed by caring Christians reaching out to those who feel lost or hopeless.

My father committed suicide and years later I felt myself in a similar place of sadness. I heard this song and felt like the Holy Spirit was singing this to me to keep me holding on. That was 2017. This is July 2023 and I’m here. Thank God for the hope he put in my heart thru his love for me. I was lost but he came to save me. Thank you Plumb for this song. It may have saved my life. I just kept listening to it and it spoke a ray of hope🙏❤️
