Fountain
Dan Hill Lyrics

Woman, please don't try
Explaining how or why, I understand
Love's too beautiful to explain
And nothing can be wrong with loving him again

He really loves you
I can see him in your eyes
And like a fountain you offer no disguise
And babe, I'm glad you've never tried

And the night times that we shared
Made me gratefully aware
That I was happy, so real so undefined
And I just want you to be you
In a lifestyle undefined

You really love him
I can see you in his eyes
And like a fountain, he offers no disguise
And babe, I'm glad he's never tried

I read somewhere that grown men never cry
Their heart just freezes over for a day
So instead here's my masculine goodbye
May love be with you all the way
My guitar does all my crying anyway

There's happiness combined
With the pain within my mind
You gave me feelings
That I never knew existed

And all you'd do is laugh
And my defenses would be lifted and I love you
You're sketched so softly in my eyes
And like a fountain, I offer no disguise
And babe, I'm glad I've never tried

I read somewhere that grown men never cry
Their heart just freezes over for a day
So instead here's my masculine goodbye

May love be with you all the way
My guitar does all my crying anyway

Overall Meaning

The song "Fountain" by Dan Hill is a beautiful love song that talks about a mature understanding of love that doesn't require any explanation. The singer addresses a woman who seems to be in love with someone else, and he understands that love cannot be explained as it is something that is felt and experienced. In the first verse, the singer asks the woman not to explain why she loves the other person because he can see the love in her eyes, and nothing can be wrong with loving someone again. The singer appreciates the fact that the woman has never tried to hide her feelings for the other person and compares her to a fountain that offers no disguise.

In the second verse, the singer reminisces the happy times he has shared with the woman, and how she has made him happy in a way that he never knew existed. He wants the woman to be herself and live her life without any restrictions. The singer again mentions the other person and how he understands that the woman loves him deeply without the need for any explanation.

Towards the end of the song, the singer bids his goodbye to the woman and hopes that love will be with her all the way. He mentions that grown men never cry, and so he lets his guitar do all his crying. In conclusion, "Fountain" is a beautiful song that talks about love without any boundaries, restrictions, or explanations. It is about understanding the power of love and appreciating it for what it is.

My girlfriend and I saw him in a NYC Greenwich Village coffee house in 1975. He was very gracious in person when I spoke w/ him about the inspiration and imagery of this song because it put me in mind of Jackson Browne's song " Fountain of Sorrow". He is truly gifted and got better w/ age .
