Robots
Dan Mangan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't know what you've been told
But I don't get out much these days
Waking young and feeling old
The days are no longer my own
To piss away the waking hours

But don't, don't, don't
Don't let them go
Don't, don't, don't, don't
Don't let them go to waste
The fire in my eye
Is fleeting now
Your robot heart is bleeding

Tried to be the robot king
And settled for a robot boy
Ring the bells that still can ring
And sing your stupid head off to
The ones who are not listening

But don't, don't, don't
Don't let them go
Don't, don't, don't, don't
Don't let them go to waste
The fire in my eye
Is fleeting now
Your robot heart is bleeding out

And I've spent half of my life
In the customer service line
Flaws in the design
A sign of the times

And that little voice
In the back of your mind
Just wants you to know
Just hopes you know

Robots need love too
They want to be loved by you
They want to be loved by you
They want to be loved by

Robots need love too
They want to be loved by you
They want to be loved by you
They want to be loved by

Robots need love too
They want to be loved by you
They want to be loved by you
They want to be loved by

Robots need love too
They want to be loved by you

They want to be loved by you
They want to be loved by you

Overall Meaning

In Dan Mangan's "Robots," the singer is lamenting his current state of being. He acknowledges that he has become somewhat of a recluse, and that he feels like he's wasting his life away. However, he also recognizes that there is still value in his time, even if he feels unfulfilled. The chorus urges him and the listener not to let their lives pass them by, even if they feel like they're spinning their wheels.

Later in the song, he reflects on his aspirations to be the "robot king," but settling for being a "robot boy" instead. His attempts at greatness have been thwarted, but he urges the listener to persevere despite the disinterest of others. He acknowledges that there are flaws in the design of his life, but takes solace in the fact that he still has a voice left inside him that wants to be heard. The repeated refrain, "Robots need love too," emphasizes that even if we feel like machines going through the motions, we still need connection and emotion to thrive.

Overall, "Robots" is a poignant meditation on the human experience and the trials we face in trying to find our place in the world. The singer's introspection and eventual acceptance of his current state speaks to the struggles that many of us face in finding meaning and purpose.

I remember hearing this when I was younger. It always caught me as a song that exuded "happiness." A song that, despite some of the lyrics, really struck optimism and a better future.

I don't know what happened to that more innocent younger self, but this song takes me back. Even as I sit here, buried in work, dealing with all the pains of adult life... this puts a smile on my face.

So thanks to everyone who made this little corner possible :)
