Dan McCafferty was forced to retire in September 2013 due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a chronic condition that severely restricts the afflicted’s ability to breathe. According to Ultimate Classic Rock, “it has gotten worse lately, and after trying to play a festival in Switzerland last weekend, Dan found it impossible to continue after performing only three songs. In the dressing room afterwards, he told the band that he couldn’t go on any longer.”
McCafferty may try to record in the studio since he can sing in 10-minute bursts.
The original and longtime vocalist for Nazareth, Dan McCafferty, died Nov. 8, 2022 at the age of 76.
Nazareth was a prolific classic rock act, at their peak in the 70's and early 80's. They released 23 albums, and McCafferty was a part of every one of them. Their 1974 cover of "Love Hurts" was their biggest song. McCafferty left the band in and released a solo album in 2019.
His former bandmate and bassist for Nazareth, Pete Agnew, memorialized him on social media. "Dan died at 12:40 today (Nov. 8). This is the saddest announcement I ever had to make. Maryann and the family have lost a wonderful loving husband and father, I have lost my best friend and the world has lost one of the greatest singers who ever lived. Too upset to say anything more at this time. - Pete."
OUT OF TIME
Dan McCafferty Lyrics

You've been away for far too long
You can't come back and think you are still mine
You're out of touch my baby
My poor discarded baby
I said baby, baby, baby you're out of time
A girl who wants to run away
It's no good thinkin' that you are still mine,oh no
You're out of touch my baby
My poor unfaithful baby
I said baby, baby, baby you're out of time
[Chorus]
Baby, baby, baby you're out of time
I said baby, baby, baby you're out of time
(Yes you're on your way out)
(You're out of, out of without a doubt)
Baby, baby, baby you're out of time
You thought you were a clever girl
Didn't give it up, her social world
You can't come back and think you are still mine
You're obsolete my baby
My poor old fashioned baby
I said baby, baby, baby you're out of time
The song "Out of Time" by Dan McCafferty appears to be a break-up song with the singer trying to let their former lover know that they are no longer interested in them. The lyrics suggest that the relationship is over, and the person they were once in love with is no longer a part of their life. The first verse communicates that the person who left is no longer relevant and cannot come back into their life as if nothing happened. The chorus repeats the phrase "Baby, baby, baby you're out of time" to emphasize that the relationship is over, and the person is running out of time to fix it.
The second verse seems to be about a woman who wants to run away but realizes that she's missed her chance. The lyrics suggest that she might have been unfaithful and that there's no point in thinking that she can go back to the way things were. The singer tells her plainly that she's "out of touch" and "out of time." The final verse calls the former lover "obsolete" and "old-fashioned," again emphasizing that the relationship is over and that there's no going back. Overall, the song seems to be about closure and moving on from a failed relationship.
