Made to Love You
Dan Owen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I never thought it could be
And there was nothing that could make me let you go
'Cause you were my wildest dream
But your open hands have become my enemies

I had to ask myself if I was right or wrong
But blinded by the making up that I knew all along
But if I was made to love you
Then how can you bring me pain?
And if I was made to love you
How come we're here again?
And why does it hurt so bad?
If I was made to love you, ooh, ooh

It didn't take long to find
That scars can't be covered from all the words you cry
The sorrow you hid behind
And all of your tears won't be able to justify

I had to ask myself if I was right or wrong
But blinded by the making up that I knew all along

But if I was made to love you
Then how can you bring me pain?
And if I was made to love you
How come we're here again?
And why does it hurt so bad?
And why does it hurt so bad?
Ooh, ooh

If I was made to love you

Overall Meaning

The opening line of "I never thought it could be" suggests that the singer is expressing a certain amount of disbelief in regards to the situation they're in. Perhaps, they can't believe they're feeling the emotions that they're feeling towards another person. The second line, "And there was nothing that could make me let you go" implies that the singer is stuck in a toxic relationship that he/she isn't ready to get out of. The third line "‘Cause you were my wildest dream" tells us that the singer was once very much in love with the person they're now questioning. However, a shift is felt in the next line as the singer says, "But your open hands have become my enemies." The words "open hands" suggest an offering, but the phrase "have become my enemies" indicates that something is off, or that something has transformed this relationship from a loving one to a more treacherous one.

The chorus is a series of questions that the singer poses to the person that they love so much. The central question being "If I was made to love you, then how can you bring me pain?" This suggests that while the singer thinks the relationship is meant to be, they are in a tremendous amount of pain. The chorus repeats the phrase "If I was made to love you," several times, which would imply that the singer is questioning their own worth and role in this relationship. "And why does it hurt so bad?" is a rhetorical question to which the singer probably already knows the answer.

As the song's story unfolds, the listener realizes that the singer has experienced some level of abuse in their relationship. The line, "It didn't take long to find that scars can't be covered from all the words you cry" is a powerful one, which suggests that the person the singer is addressing has done more than just make harsh comments. The phrase "scars can't be covered" implies that the singer has permanent damage, and their situation is irreversible. By the second chorus, the singer asks "And why does it hurt so bad?" again, perhaps acknowledging that they're experiencing physical pain brought on by the abuse.
