ClockWise
Dan Potthast Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The lyrics to Dan Potthast's song "Clockwise" appears to be a reflection on the disappointments and disillusionments of life. The lyrics are filled with symbolism, imagery, and metaphors that convey a sense of helplessness and despair in the singer. The phrase "clockwise and down in a spiral clockwise" implies a sense of being trapped in a cycle of negativity, helplessness, and despair that one can't seem to escape from.
The lyric "wouldn't you like to see the world I could take you all around the world" suggests that the singer once had hopes and dreams of taking a loved one on a journey of exploration and discovery. However, the following lyrics indicate that the singer has become disillusioned and cynical, feeling a sense of regret over the loss of a friend who they couldn't save, and feeling dejected over the world's injustices. The phrase "we're gonna be the things your heart asks Mr. conscience please" seems to suggest a plea for forgiveness and redemption.
The final lyric "wouldn't you like to feed the world well I sat back and fed you to the world I watched it chew you up and spit you right back down again clockwise" paints a picture of a cynical and bitter individual who has given up on their dreams in the face of the world's harsh realities. The use of the word 'clockwise' and the reference to a spiral suggest a sense of inevitability, that one is stuck in a cycle of endless repetition and despair.

Clockwise and down in a spiral clockwise
We are moving in a circular motion and spiraling downwards
Wouldn't you like to see the world
Do you desire to explore the world?
I could take you all around the world
I have the ability to show you the whole world
We're gonna be the things your heart asks
Together we will become whatever your heart desires
Mr. conscience please all around the world
Oh conscience, please guide me and keep me aware wherever we go
And I'll watch you spinning clockwise and down in a spiral clockwise
I will observe you going in circles and spiraling downwards
I miss my old friend where did he go
I feel nostalgic for my former companion; where has he gone?
He pissed himself down the drain and I watched him spinning clockwise
He urinated and went down the drain, while I observed him circling around
Wouldn't you like to feed the world
Do you wish to nourish the world?
Well, I sat back and fed you to the world
I remained passive and allowed the world to consume you
I watched it chew you up and spit you right back down again clockwise
I saw it eat you whole and then reject you, causing you to spin in circles once again
