His distinctive voice and finger-picking guitar style has taken him across the UK and USA playing to a multitude of people, all the while never forgetting his roots. Wilde is currently in full swing promoting his debut album ‘This is The Place’ an exploration of distinctly English folk-pop but finds time to chat with us about growing up in the North, his influences and what we can expect from him in 2011
This Is The Place is the debut album from Blackpool-based singer-songwriter Dan Wilde and it's a pretty impressive place to start.
The opener, Nearest I Have To A Home', marries a memorable tune to a fine lyrics, which is the definition of a good song, and it's followed by Broke My Heart Alright' featuring an exuberant fiddle somewhat at odds with the sentiment of the song. Nevertheless, it works. These two tracks feature a full band and give Dan's voice an opportunity to soar. Elsewhere there is just voice and guitar or combinations of instruments including banjo, mandolin and ukelele.
Lyrically, the album explores themes of loss and confusion and can sometimes seem naive to the world weary ear. Others would call it honest. The arrangements, by a small cast of supporting musicians, are excellent and Dan's voice is strong and full of character - there is even a hint of the young Paul Simon about him. Listen to 'Be Gone' and you'll hear it. Dan Wilde is a name we'll be hearing a lot more of.
Out of Nowhere

How I love it so
When you refuse to beg or borrow
You just steal the show
And out of nowhere
You took every stare
As if it was your very own
To reach your first hook
I was thinking 'bout taking you home
You made me feel like a fool for thinking
That I wanted you
You pulled me in whilst you were singing
That's just what you do
And out of nowhere
You took every stare
As if it was your very own
In the time that it took
To reach your first hook
I was thinking 'bout taking you home
I got carried away
Can you see what you're putting me through?
But you're not to blame
It's just I can't get enough of the thing that you do
So pull them in and put them under
Give them what you can
Don't spell it out just let them wonder
It's all in your hands
And out of nowhere
You took every stare
As if it was your very own
In the time that it took
To reach your first hook
I was thinking 'bout taking you home
The opening lines of Dan Wilde's song "Out of Nowhere" express the singer's admiration for someone who "break(s) the rules like there's no tomorrow." He finds it attractive that they "refuse to beg or borrow" and instead "just steal the show." The second verse suggests that the object of the singer's admiration is a performer of some kind, perhaps a musician or a singer, who has captured the attention of everyone present with their talent.
Throughout the song, the singer describes the magnetic quality of this person, who seemingly came out of nowhere and took over the room. As the song progresses, the singer becomes more and more infatuated with this person, imagining taking them home. He admits that he feels like a fool for wanting them, but he can't help being drawn in by their charm.
In the final verse, the singer urges this person to continue using their talents to "pull them in and put them under," encouraging them to be mysterious and keep people guessing. The song ends with the repeated refrain of "out of nowhere," emphasizing the sudden and unexpected quality of this person's entrance into the singer's life.
