Red Roses for A Blue Lady
Dana Vic Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want some red roses for a blue lady
Mister florist take my order please
We had a silly quarrel the other day
I hope these pretty flowers chase her blues away

I want some red roses for a blue lady
Send them to the sweetest gal in town
And if they do the trick, I'll hurry back to pick
Your best white orchid for her wedding gown

(I want some red roses for a blue lady)
We had a silly quarrel the other day
I hope these pretty flowers chase her blues away

I want some red roses for a blue, blue lady
Send them to the sweetest gal in town
And if they do the trick, I'll hurry back to pick
Your best white orchid for her wedding gown

Your best white orchid for her wedding gown

@@CaptZdq1 You got me to thinking on that one. I also use the expression, and have heard others use it, too.
Normally, and in a literal sense, what you said is correct. But, it turns out that "light years ahead of" is an English idiom, where its actual and accepted meaning is/ can-be different from what a literal, word-by-word, translation would seem to indicate. Another common example in English is when someone tells you to 'hold your horses", fortunately, you likely know that you don't have to own any horses to comply. You can just patiently wait a little bit longer, lol.
I suppose every language has idioms. Spanish does. In school, I earned that when someone in certain areas says, "Como no!" to you, they mean, "Of course!" But, what they actually said is "How not!", or "How no!"
I've wondered what a foreigner to the US might think if someone tells him, "She's built like a brick house". If all they have is a simple translation dictionary, they'll likely be flipping pages, and looking around for a lady who looks pretty bad, don't you think?

(I had to look it up):
"Definition of light-years ahead
: much more advanced than others;
ideas that are light-years ahead of their time.
This new technology puts the company light-years ahead of its competitors."

My Mum had this playing as I was growing up, sadly she is not with me anymore, but, this sure does bring back some lovely times with good listening music. I miss my past.

Now this one! My dad was a musician, and every time I came into the lounge at the Queens Hotel in East London, where he played, he would stop whatever he was playing and swing into this one for me!! The greatest (for me at least!)
