Butterfly
Dance Dance Revolution Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ay, iyaiyai,
Ay, iyaiyai,
Ay, iyaiyai,
Where's my samurai?

I've been searching for a man
All across Japan
Just to find, to find my samurai
Someone who is strong
But still a little shy
Yes I need, I need my samurai

Ay, ay, ay,
I'm your little butterfly
Green, black and blue,
Make the colours in the sky
Ay, ay, ay, I'm your little butterfly
Green, black and blue,
Make the colours in the sky

I've been searching in the woods
And high upon the hills
Just to find, to find my samurai
Someone who won't regret
To keep me in his net
Yes I need, I need my samurai

Ay, ay, ay,
I'm your little butterfly
Green, black and blue,
Make the colours in the sky
Ay, ay, ay, I'm your little butterfly
Green, black and blue,
Make the colours in the sky

Ay, iyaiyai,
Ay, iyaiyai,
Ay, iyaiyai,
Where's my samurai?

Ay, iyaiyai,
Ay, iyaiyai,
Ay, iyaiyai,
Where's my samurai?

Ay, ay, ay,
I'm your little butterfly
Green, black and blue,
Make the colours in the sky
Ay, ay, ay, I'm your little butterfly
Green, black and blue,
Make the colours in the sky

Ay, ay, ay,
I'm your little butterfly
Green, black and blue,
Make the colours in the sky
Ay, ay, ay, I'm your little butterfly
Green, black and blue,
Make the colours in the sky

Ay, iyaiyai,
Ay, iyaiyai,
Ay, iyaiyai,
Where's my samurai?

Ay, iyaiyai,
Ay, iyaiyai,
Ay, iyaiyai,
Where's my samurai?

Ay, ay, ay,
I'm your little butterfly

Green, black and blue,
Make the colours in the sky

Overall Meaning

The song Butterfly by Dance Dance Revolution is about a woman searching for her samurai, a man who is strong yet still a little shy. She has traveled across Japan, searching in the woods and high upon the hills, just to find him. She sings that she needs her samurai and is hoping he will keep her in his net, showing that she is willing to have a protective and committed relationship. The chorus of the song features the repetition of "Ay, ay, ay, I'm your little butterfly, green, black and blue, make the colours in the sky," which suggests her desire to be with her samurai, as she compares herself to a butterfly, a symbol of transformation and freedom.

The lyrics can also be interpreted as the search for oneself, finding the inner strength and confidence. The woman may be seeking someone who can bring balance to her life and help her become more resilient, hence finding the "little shy" quality she desires in her samurai. The use of colors like green, black, and blue in the lyrics could also represent personal growth, stability, and trust.

This song has randomly popped in my head every few weeks since I first heard it in DDR as a kid and actually hearing it for the first time in over a decade was a cathartic experience.

So there I was working at a larosas at kings island...went on lunch to the arcade next door and there was a new game. DDR. So I watch a little kid Plat and thought "oh its not that hard. I'll give it a try." First song I played was Butterfly. My daughter listens to it now. Says it's in her top 5.

Carrie Cupcakes

When I am bored working in my cubicle, this song puts me in MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE. I become a paper stapling, copy making, coffee chugging warrior.
